An Overview of Best SUVs In India for Under ₹13 lakh
Indians love SUVs since they first appeared in the market a couple of decades ago. Since then, there have been all kinds of excuses invented by those dying to get behind the wheel of these large cars. From family picnics to long distance highway trips to bumping around city roads in a traffic jam, there is no denying the appeal of these rugged and mostly macho SUVs in India.

Mahindra Scorpio: The first of the big-selling SUVs in India, the Scorpio was bound to
be a success as it had Mahindra's rock solid goodwill to lean back on. Mahindra
has been in the diesel commercial vehicle space for years with only their jeeps
to offer in the passenger class. The Scorpio changed all that. Since 2002, it
has become the standard against which other Indian SUVs are compared. The mHawk
engine was a welcome upgrade and the car comes with a 2.2-litre
diesel engine making 75bhp and a 2.5-litre diesel engine making 120bhp. Both
engines have mileage figures of around 15 Kmpl.
Ford EcoSport: The fact that it is built on a common platform along with other Ford
models such as the Amaze has done nothing to detract buyers from this nimble
and quick mini-SUV. Available in three engine variants such as the 1.5-litre
petrol, 1.5-litre diesel, and 1-litre Ecoboost which offer 110.46
bhp, 123.28 bhp and 89.75 bhp respectively. Fuel consumption figures are modest
with the Ecoboost offering the most at 22.7 Kmpl, the petrol engine returning
15.8 Kmpl and the diesel 18.8 Kmpl.
Renault Duster: Dusters sell because they offer different styling when compared to
the rest of the SUVs in India. They also come backed with the Renault badge of
quality manufacture and scores of Indians fell in love with this SUV which
comes in 1.6-litre petrol (103bhp), 1.5-litre diesel (84bhp) and a 1.5-litre
diesel (108bhp) guises.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza: Based on the larger Suzuki Vitara, the Maruti
Vitara Brezza has garnered favorable reviews for its fuel efficiency of
24.5 Kmpl. In fact, it is one of the few SUVs that are sold along with an Automotive
Research Association of India (ARAI) certificate
testifying to this mileage. The car is powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder
DDiS engine that makes 89bhp of power.
Hyundai Creta: Another common platform vehicle, the Creta shares the same genetics
as the i20. It comes in two diesel and one petrol engine variants. Automatic
transmission is an option on the diesel model and 4-wheel drive is conspicuous
by its absence. The 1.6-litre petrol engine outputs 121bhp
with fuel efficiency figures of 15.29Kmpl. The 1.6-litre diesel delivers 126bhp
and 19.67 Kmpl and the 1.4-litre diesel engine gives 89bhp with 21.38 Kmpl in
mileage.
