An Australia PR Process that Unites Parents with Children in Australia

by Abhinav Immigration Services Digital Marketing Executive
The Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 143) allows parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents to permanently live, work and study in Australia. Immigration through this Australia PR process also provides access to Medicare – Australia’s public healthcare scheme – which is an additional advantage for ageing parents. The department of Home Affairs (DHA) is the federal Australian authority that grants this visa.

The parent may be living in Australia on a valid visa, or be living in a country other than Australia – at the time of filing the application. Eligible family members can be included in the application. Parents can either apply as retirees, or fulfill the general eligibility requirements for this visa. Those who are not applying as retirees must have a sponsor, meet the balance of family requirement, and show assurance of support.

The non-refundable fee for this visa is AUD 47,455. This amount is payable in two installments. Additional charges apply for family members included in the application. Eligible parents can claim the multifarious benefits of Australia PR by following a three-step application process:

Step 1: Visa Application

Submit a paper application for this visa – including relevant forms, the first installment of the visa fee, and accurate documents related to the identity of the applicant, sponsor, balance of family, character, assurance of support, dependents, partner, etc. The application must be mailed via courier or post to the correct address of the Parent Visa Processing Centre in Perth.

Step 2: Visa Approval

After submitting the application, the candidate and accompanying family members will be required to undergo medical examinations, security checks, and provide biometrics; and pay the second installment of the visa fee. Applications for the Subclass 143 visa do not have a standard processing time, but are subject to caps and ques. qualified applicants are added to the queue. The Contributory Parent Visa Australia visa may be granted after several years. Once a place is available, the application will continue to be assessed and the DHA will send their decision – visa approval or rejection – in writing.

Those who wish to incur the visa costs gradually over many years, instead of paying all the associated visa fees in a short period, can choose to first apply for the Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (Subclass 173) and then the Subclass 143 visa. Since the processing period for this visa is extremely long and undetermined, it is also advisable to seek the expertise of an immigration consultant to explore alternative visa options for parents to join their children in Australia.

Eventually, after living as permanent residents for a considerable duration, eligible parents may also be able to apply for citizenship. This Australia PR process permits settled Australian residents and citizens to extend the privileges of Australian permanent residency to their parents, and ultimately unites families who may support each other in the pursuit of making Australia their new home.
