All you need to know about IUI Techniqueby Hitesh Joshi Digital Marketer
IUI technique is a procedure to treat infertility. The seminal fluid is prepared in the laboratory by washing it with special media, and then it is injected inside the uterus, after stimulating the ovaries to produce more eggs during the treatment cycle. Bathing sperm to the fallopian tubes to fertilize the waiting egg, resulting in normal pregnancy. This procedure usually takes 15-20 minutes and is usually done in the doctor's clinic.
What is IUI Technique, when is it used & techniques used for IUI?
Rarely, some women may be allergic to the proteins that are found in the husband's semen and this causes redness, swelling, and pain in the vagina when the semen touches it during intercourse. Using a condom prevents these symptoms, but it also prevents pregnancy. If the allergy is severe, then IUI can be effective only if a lot of seed protein is removed before IUI.
IUI is usually used as a first-line treatment for unexplained infertility and sometimes it can be combined with ovarian stimulation.
In these cases the sperm will not be able to pass through the mucosal secretion in the neck, therefore it will not be able to reach the egg. So this method allows the sperm to go straight to the uterus.
Ejaculation Erection and Disorders
Cases in which Intra Uterine Insemination is ineffective:
Blocked or damaged uterine tubes.
- Ovarian failure.
- Severe seminal fluid anomaly.
- Severe endometriosis.
There are basic investigations that should be done for the woman before the procedure is performed and it includes ovulation control and the patency or franchise of the fallopian tubes.
IUI Sample preparation: Preparation for Intra-Uterine Insemination
IUI Sample preparation include-
1 Controlling Ovulation:
Previously, ovulation was monitored by recording body temperature and noting any change in vaginal discharge, or by doing blood and urine tests on Days 12-16 of the cycle. Now the ovulation check is done by vaginal ultrasound after the woman is given ovarian stimulant medication to ensure the maturity of the follicles (the eggs) and the doctor usually prefers to have at least 1 -3 adult follicles to give the HCG injection. The seed preparation usually takes 1-3 hours and IUI is done in the time that is decided by the doctor.
2-Preparation of the seed sample:
A seed sample can be produced by masturbation at home, or in a special room in the hospital, after 2-5 days of abstinence. The semen is then washed in the laboratory, thus isolating normal motile sperm from abnormal immotile sperm. The sperm is then separated from other components of the semen and concentrated in small quantities. Different media and techniques can be used for the Preparation of the seed sample. Sperm Preparation takes around 30-60 minutes.
IUI Treatment Method: How long can IUI be done?
IUI technique is usually done twice during the treatment cycle and the action of IUI has been shown to increase pregnancy rate twice because it decreases loss of fertility period during ovulation, but there was a study that was done comparing the pregnancy rate after IUI over time, or twice and found no difference.
- Usually, the IUI treatment method takes 15-20 minutes. The patient is then asked to lie on his back for the duration of the time.
- If the semen has not been washed properly, the injection of semen into the uterus can cause contractions which have shown the semen and can cause pain due to prostaglandins called special enzymes which are responsible for the passage of blood during menses.
- The patient can continue their normal life and passing a small amount of blood in 1-2 days after IUI is normal.
IUI Technique Results-
The pregnancy test should not be done before 2 weeks have passed since the IUI technique started. By doing it before, it can cause false-negative result (which means the patient is pregnant while the test is negative) and in cases where hormones are used for induction of ovulation, like HCG, by doing the pregnancy test before 2 weeks can cause a false positive result (which means that the patient is not pregnant while the test is positive which is caused by the hormone HCG which is found in the blood).
When can we repeat the IUI Technique?
If the IUI technique fails, the patient can repeat the IUI test and it can be repeated 3-6 times to increase the pregnancy rate.
IUI can be repeated after at least a month or more and this depends on the doctor and the couple's mutual decision. And it has been proven that the success rate of IUI is 50-60% if it’s repeated for 4 times and if IUI fails after 4 tests,
it is favored not to repeat it. If this is the result, the doctor will decide the next step as appropriate.
