All about GNS3 to know how to install about it

by Server Tours Become Network Engineer

There is no cost associated with using GNS3, a network simulator. It acts as a substitute for real networking hardware by simulating routers, switches, and other gadgets. When it comes to Cisco's routers and switches, only their proprietary software will do. Cisco IOS is the name of this program. Cisco IOS can be run on GNS3. Copyright rules prevent GNS3 from shipping with Cisco IOS, hence Cisco IOS is not included in the standard download. Not even Cisco IOS itself is included, only the infrastructure to run it. Cisco devices need the corresponding IOS to be downloaded and imported into GNS3.

Find out where to get hold of GNS3 Cisco IOS image files.

Cisco IOS image files are widely available. Either a Cisco device or Cisco's website will provide you with the necessary files (it required an active subscription plan). There are a plethora of online resources that provide Cisco IOS images for classroom use. Visit this page for the most comprehensive assortment of Cisco IOS image files available anywhere on the web.

A Guide to GNS3's Cisco IOS Import and Installation

Launch GNS3, go to Edit > Preferences > IOS Image File, and choose the downloaded IOS image file.

Just click the New Image button, then the Browse button, and then locate the IOS image file you downloaded.

There is a compression level applied to IOS files automatically. When using GNS3, you may choose between using compressed or decompressed files. As a bonus, compressed files take up far less disk space and are simpler to organize. Keep IOS files in their uncompressed form by selecting the No option unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise.

Make sure the file path is correct, then proceed.

The wizard displays a cautionary notice if the chosen IOS is from an unsupported device.

In practical terms, you shouldn't use an old gadget. The GNS3 IOS is based on the genuine Cisco IOS, hence it also issues a warning about antiquated software. This warning may be disregarded if your sole intention is to utilize the device to study for Cisco IOS exams or get practical experience with the operating system.

The wizard then reads the chosen IOS file, pulls out the hardware details (platform and chassis number), and displays them on the next page with a device name it has generated for you.

If the data extraction was inaccurate, choose the appropriate platform and chassis number from the menus. The name of the gadget may be changed as needed.

The data needs to be double-checked or updated, and to go forward, choose the Next option.

When we go to the following screen, we'll be able to choose the amount of RAM that this gadget uses. The minimal amount of RAM that should be used by the device is what the wizard allocates automatically. You may make changes if necessary, however. One can go for also gns3 ios images for router 7200 download.

If the device we've chosen has interchangeable interfaces, the following page will let us know where to place them.

To proceed, click the Next button when you've chosen the relevant interfaces.

Once we know that the chosen IOS is for a device with WIC modules, we can go on to the next page and configure the installation of WIC interfaces into available WIC slots.

Make your selections for the WIC interfaces you'll be using, and then hit Next.

The following page will let us set the maximum allowed CPU use for this IOS. This is a mandatory field and must always be filled out. Incorrect or flawed IOS execution is prevented by this setting. After this setting has been set, GNS3 will not let the IOS use more than this percentage of the CPU.

Use the value given by the Idle-PC detector by clicking the button.

To exit the wizard, choose the last option and click Finish.

For the sake of this post, we shall install Palo Alto's Next-Generation Virtual Firewall locally in GNS3. This post continues our deployment of the Palo Alto Firewall in the VMWare Workstation. It is well known that the GNS3 Network Simulator supports native KVM emulation. That's why the palo alto firewall image download for gns3 is available on the support page and set it up in GNS3.
