Air India Express: A Low Cost Carrier For India
Air India Express, the low cost subsidiary of the national flag carrier of India, Air India is indeed a well-known airline in the Indian skies today. The airline was a result of the continuous demands of the expatriate community in the south of India, especially Kerala, and was established in the year 2004. The need for a budget airline back then was even more since there were few players in the market that especially operated flights on the South India to the Middle East corridor and the airline proved to be an immediate hit with the people. The first flight of the airline took off from the Trivandrum International Airport Thiruvananthapuram on 29th April 2005 to land at the Abu Dhabi International Airport and the airline hasn’t looked back since.
Being a low cost airline, Air India Express maintained its operations on the same policies as that of other low cost airlines and offers a no frills flying experience. The airline maintains a fleet that is uniform so that the costs on maintenance and training may be kept at a minimal. The fleet consists of Boeing B737-800 aircraft which help in serving both domestic as well as regional destinations. These aircraft accommodate around 180 passengers and have a single class with all the seats arranged in the Economy Class configuration. Air India Express has mainly maintained its focus on short range routes which enable it to offer the best possible price on tickets, a factor which has helped it to maintain a healthy market share in spite of an increase in competition.
