Advice and care for your senior dogs

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Depending on the breed and size, our friends the dogs, age before or after. Although the cause is not clear, it is always known that small breeds have a life expectancy higher than large breeds, and within large breeds there are some like Great Danes that have an even shorter life expectancy. Even so, it can be considered that an 8-year-old dog is already a senior dog

Like puppies, when they reach a certain age, dogs need special care, as they sometimes suffer changes in behavior and certain diseases associated with that age. That is why here we want to give you a series of tips so that you can improve the daily life of your pets. To get more tips follow Pet Home Euthanasia Palm Springs.

Diet and feeding of our grandparents

An important point in the care of senior dogs is feeding. Dogs as they get older tend to exercise less and gain weight. Keep in mind that bones and joints suffer a lot with overweight, so it is recommended that they have a balanced diet and low in fat. Taking into account this, it is preferable that they take a senior feed, which in addition to helping the metabolism of older dogs is low in fat, or a light diet, if you are already overweight.

It is also very important that they stay well hydrated, for this, apart from ensuring that they always have fresh, clean water at their disposal, we can help them by supplementing their diet with wet food specifically for dogs.

Physical exercise

The exercise also plays an important role in the lives of senior dogs. When they reach an advanced age, the physical form of the dogs begins to deteriorate. They no longer have as much resistance as before, and sometimes they are reluctant to go for a walk. Even so, it is important that they exercise, and walk approximately 30 minutes a day. This, as we have mentioned before, helps to prevent overweight and diseases such as arthritis, and makes dogs maintain a physical shape appropriate to their age.

Large dogs often suffer more diseases and injuries related to bones and joints. For them, apart from moderate exercise, it is advisable to help them with supplements such as chondroprotectors.

Home care

Last, but not least, we will talk about the comforts of our grandparents at home. As we have been saying, as in people, in older animals the muscles and joints suffer, so it is important that they have a soft bed where they can rest.

Also with the age they are losing faculties, their senses are atrophied little by little, they do not listen just like when they were young and they are losing vision. For all these reasons it is important to take special care in the walks and avoid being disoriented and lost. It is also important not to significantly modify the normal distribution at home so that they can perform well.

Our senior dogs need our care, and it is important to make periodic visits to the veterinarian to prevent and early detection of possible diseases. If you follow our advice your little friends will thank you!
