However, her recent disastrous adventure in a wadi during a storm turned into a smile when she escaped unscathed thanks to the Omanis.

A flight attendant at KLM, Eleonora Kokorina (Elly to friends), has been to Oman more than 12 times and each time she feels like a part of Oman, which she calls a "special country".

His visit was nearly disastrous due to the cyclonic storms that recently struck as they maneuvered between huge wadi rocks.

Currently based in Amsterdam, with a passion for writing travel blogs and poetry, Elly dreams of traveling the world and creating her own stories from her love of cultures.

Joined by his sister Paula Kaper and Hassan Al Habsi, the trio escaped the clutches of near-death by walking through palm trees and eventually ended up in the village of Bidiya where they were brought to safety.

They began by spending a night in the desert sands of Sharqiyah, staring at the moon. Then they moved to Wadi Hawer, 200km from Muscat, known for its turquoise blue pools and lush date plantations. They thought it was a perfect choice for the hot desert, with its crystal clear blue pools and beautiful waterfalls.

But dark thunderstorms swept through the Hajar Mountains, bringing torrential rains, high winds and dust storms.

The aftermath of the storm took them to Bidiya, where Moath Al Rashdi and his family helped rescue them and acted as the perfect host.

Her blog mentions that it is the kindness and hospitality of the Omanis who openly came to help them that she will cherish for the rest of her life. They got too close to a possible electrocution while wading through the water.

They breathed a sigh of relief and came to safety in the muddy, slippery farmland to the mountain village with towering palm trees.

Remembering her terrible times, Elly calmed down, saying, "Relax, calm down. You are not in a dangerous situation. Stay with me for now.

The words of author Dannion Brinkley (Saved by the Light and At Peace in the Light) came to mind, the man who was struck by lightning and lived to tell the world of his near-death experience.

"I didn't want to go through the same thing. I felt the fear come back," she said and began to pray.

“God, please make us invisible to the lightning, put protection on us and make sure we reach the car safely. I want to live. I choose life," Eleonora recalls sitting on the floor and reciting the prayer to herself.

Hassan was warmly welcomed by the sons of Shaikh Al Rashdi. “I felt at home here and was happy to discover more beauty in this area than to be able to experience Wadi Hawer and the beautiful village of Bidiya.”

In the end, the trio still can't believe it all happened.

Elly sums it up by saying, “It wasn't a dream. We've made friends, we've overcome some fears, and most importantly, we're safe and sound.

Moath arrived home with delicious homemade Omani dishes garnished with spices for dinner. With a happy ending, they laughed together at the table and were given a room to finally sleep and deal with this unexpected day.
