Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig

by Ryan Patrick Advertiser
People are frequently ignorant that many local shelters have guinea pigs, or that a Cavy rescue could be placed nearby. In many regions of the state, hundreds of rescued guinea pigs need homes – primarily as a result of caretaker surrenders. Doug Duke, director of the Nevada SPCA in Las Vegas, finds that in his region, half of their adoptable guinea pigs are turned in by owners and the other half are transferred from the county shelter.

A pet store for guinea pig is often left unstructured and not looked into accurately. Finding info on proper care into the hands of prospective new guardians helps them establish better-informed conclusions. Since January 1, 2003, California pet stores have been commanded by law to provide care sheets with the leverage of each creature. Several dedicated guinea pig people were instrumental in taking this legislation took place. Try to encourage your state representatives to address this important matter for all pet-store animals in your land.

Then how does a small Guinea pig rescue, prepare for such large numbers of animals? Amanda Peterson, president and organizer of Piggie Poo, said the first precedence is to raise funds for feed, housing and veterinary expenditures. She predicts that the rescue will invest $20 per guinea pig during the intake procedure, which could live upwards to half dozen weeks. The guinea pigs will after those likely live in further homes for up to 16 weeks, she supposed. Piggy Poo provides the foster families with everything needed to care for the guinea pigs, including lodging, bedding and feed.

Any breeding undertaking should be engaged seriously and left to only experienced Cavy breeders. Training should not be done at a school or scientific project or to permit children to see the miracle of birth. Too many guinea pigs are gone on the streets and in humane societies.

Calves do not interact through common grooming behaviors as do many other pets, but rather look for direct contact by standing side by side to their target of tenderness. Guinea hogs are very outspoken. Recognized sounds emitted by caves have been defined as chatter, sing, chirp, and grunt and squeal to name a few. Many guinea pig owners can testify to the delightful scream of their guinea pig as they reach for the refrigerator door handle or a box of treats.

These soft, social companion pets will love the company of another guinea pig (if you have two, house only same gender pairs), as well as interaction with their Pet Parents. Although shy at first, they will develop intense affection for their Pet Parents and may whistle to signal their happiness. Guinea pigs are diurnal, so they are most alive during the daytime and will sleep about 4-6 hours per night.

Guinea pigs are not for one and all. They're not just for kids anymore! Only an informed, committed guardian who is willing to care for them day after day and seek health care when needed will find them charming companions.
