Adelaide Cardboard Recycling Services Reduce Tree Cutting & Carbon Footprint on the Environment

by Kelly Rodriguez Adelaide Waste & Recycling Centre

Cardboard, also known as corrugated cardboard, is generally used for making boxes for packaging, egg cartons, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, and more.  Cardboard is 100% recyclable and biodegradable material. It can be reprocessed and reused in the form of thick sheets or stiff multilayered papers once they have been used, discarded, or otherwise regarded as waste

Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre’s recycling depot in Adelaide accepts all types of cardboard for recycling. Specialised recycling processes are used at the Adelaide cardboard recycling facility for certain types of cardboards, such as those that are waxed, coated, or used for food packaging. Sorting and classification of wasted cardboard material also occurs on site.

Once cardboard arrives at Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre’s recycling depot in Adelaide, it is sorted according to the material it is made of. In most cases, the waste is generally classified into corrugated cardboard or boxboard, the latter category is mostly used for cardboard drink containers or cereal boxes. Sorting is important since paper mills manufacture different grades of materials based on the materials being recovered.

General process for cardboard recycling

Shredding and pulping are followed after sorting at the Adelaide cardboard recycling centre. Shredding breaks down the cardboard paper fibres into minute pieces, which is then mixed with water and chemicals to breakdown paper fibres, which turns it into a slurry substance. This process is termed as pulping. The pulp material is then blended with new pulp, which is most often from wood chips. This solidifies the pulp and makes it firmer. The material is then filtered to remove impurities, such as strings, glue, tape, and other foreign materials.

Final processing of cardboard waste

The pulp is then passed through a chamber where contaminants such as metal staples and plastics are removed by centrifugal force. The following process is de-inking or cleaning, which thoroughly cleans the pulp to ensure that it is ready for the final processing, in which the cleaned pulp is blended with new production materials and dried. Excess water is then pressed out and pulp is formed into long rolls of solid sheets, known as linerboards. The linerboards are then glued together, to make a new piece of cardboard. Alternatively, linerboards can be moved to boxboard manufacturers where the manufacturing process is completed to make boxes for packaging or transporting products. This is a standardised process, Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre may use many other procedures for recycling as per the requirements of a particular project or the type of cardboard to be recycled.

Reducing the load on landfills

Adelaide cardboard recycling not only saves the environment from deterioration by reducing pollution, but it also conserves valuable resources and creates jobs. The recycling depot in Adelaide helps in reducing the dumping of cardboard waste into landfills. One tonne of cardboard recycled at the Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre’s recycling depot in Adelaide helps in saving more than 8 cubic yards of landfill space. This way, the company helps in improving the cleanliness of environment, and promotes healthy surroundings.

The amount of energy required to produce corrugated packaging products is significantly reduced due to a higher percentage of cardboard recycling. The energy saved can then be used for other manufacturing or household purposes.

Saving trees and use of water for manufacturing new products

Cardboard and paper come from trees, and  so Adelaide cardboard recycling reduces the need for the number of trees to be cut down each year. It is estimated that for each tonne of cardboard recycled at the recycling depot in Adelaide, about 10 to 28 trees are saved, which further helps in preserving the natural environment. Additionally, as the recycled cardboard had passed through the processed stage already, less water is needed for the production of new materials. In fact, recycling paper saves around 75% of water, compared to the processes that require the production of new material from virgin fibre.

The company also offers cardboard recycling bins for your business with regular scheduled collections. The company’s Adelaide cardboard recycling executives can also help in managing your waste disposal costs by attending your premises to conduct an obligation-free audit. This can help you in saving costs by diverting waste away from landfill to the Adelaide cardboard recycling facility.
