Accelerate your growth potential with startup business grants

by Government Grants Owner

If you own a startup business and are looking for ways to grow it, startup business grants can make all the difference to your endeavor. It's the free money that you don’t have to pay, provided you qualify for it, and use the money only for the purpose for which it was granted. The money can be used to buy stock, reach out to new customers, or pay salaries. Grants.gov maintains the most comprehensive database of federal grants, including startup business grants. Narrow down your search to the results for which you have good chances of winning a grant. Small Business Administration (SBA) helps small businesses find conventional means of funding. It also offers startup business grants, targeting specifically companies involved in research and exports.

Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) provides startup business grants through 12 main federal agencies including the Department of Agriculture, Department of Education, and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) focuses on businesses involved with a research program. The federal STTR grants are currently given by the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Sciences, National Science Foundation, and NASA. State Trade Expansion Program (STEP) awards startup business grants to businesses involved in exporting. If you run an agriculture or food service business, you may have a good shot at startup business grants offered by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Grants targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)

Your local chamber of commerce should be able to connect you with startup business grants that fit your situation. National Association for the Self Employed (NASE) provides grants worth $5,000 to help small businesses grow. The Economic Development Administration (EDA) offers two separate awards to the winners of its Venture Challenge, and Capital Challenge. Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) offer free marketing, generous funding, and business-related educational courses to aspiring entrepreneurs.

Your local MBDA can help you apply for debt-based financing, as well as federal, state, and local business grants. Every year, FedEx organizes a startup business grant competition for small businesses with fewer than 99 employees. Awards over $300,000 are given to 10 small businesses, including a $30,000 grant, and $1,000 in FedEx credits to the grand prize winners.
