Abrasion Test: What you need to know!

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

The resistance to abrasion of surfaces in general, whether surfaces of furniture for domestic or public use, laminated surfaces of decorative coatings of floors, walls and ceilings or surface coatings of working plane or toilet of kitchen and bathroom furniture, It evaluates with a rotary abrasion equipment using abrasives with a specific wear capacity.

Here is Taber Abrasion Machine that is the best option to test the wear resistance of fabrics, leather, and more. Here you can get Taber abrasion tester for sale with the competitive price.

The test equipment, shown in the photograph, applies a wear action by means of two overloaded cylindrical wheels, with a certain weight, which are coated with sandpaper previously conditioned and specific according to the considered norm. Occasionally, the abrasive used consists of abrasive wheels or wheels with certain wear action that require a regeneration every certain number of cycles. When sandpaper is used, it must also be replaced, every certain number of cycles, to keep the wear action constant.

The sample rotates on its axis at a speed of 60 revolutions per minute, so that the wheels are rolling on the surface of the sample producing a circle concentric to the axis of the specimen.

This circle shows the wear index of the surface under test. During the entire wear action, a suction device that eliminates the particles generated in the test is disposed a few millimeters from the surface of the sample and at two equidistant points.

Generally, for each sample analyzed, three test specimens are used in which the abrasion resistance is determined according to the evaluation criteria established by the corresponding test method.

In some cases, as for example in laminate floor coverings, the criterion for assessing the resistance is based on the number of cycles corresponding to the initial point of wear. This initial point is the number of cycles in which the disappearance of the printed design in three quadrants clearly manifests itself. In this case, the resistance to abrasion is expressed from the average of the three specimens with approximation of 100 turns, depending on the abrasion classes of AC1 to AC5 according to the number of cycles obtained for the initial point.

To determine the abrasion resistance of wooden floors, the abrasion value to the support is calculated, as the number of turns necessary to abrade the varnish to the support when it is visible in 12 of the 16 sectors of the surface tested (as minimum in one sector per quadrant).

Finally, in the evaluation of surface abrasion resistance of furniture, the initial point of wear (PI) is determined as that in which the appearance of the first clearly noticeable sign of wear of the substrate is observed, a layer of another tone, or wear design printed in all four quadrants of the specimen test.
