A Wool Doona Can Be Easier to Care for Than You Think
by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts OnlineHave you considered buying a wool doona but have so far resisted making a purchase because you think that it may be difficult to care for? If this is the case, we want to put your mind at rest and give you some guidance on caring for your new woollen bedding.
Washable Wool Doonas are Easy to Keep Clean
There are many advantages that come with buying woollen bedding, including that it can be washed. Yes, that’s right; the washable wool doona does exist. However, you’ll probably find that you don’t need to wash it very often and it’s all due to the fact that wool is a naturally hygienic material. We all know that wool protects sheep from the rain and cold and yet is also able to keep them cool as the weather warms up. The properties that help to keep sheep comfortable also help to keep us comfortable too and, as the wool is also naturally self-cleaning, it requires washing less often. Any moisture that it may absorb from your body while you’re asleep is cleverly wicked away into the atmosphere – leaving both you and your quilt cool and dry.
To ensure that you give your quilt the best chance to dry out after use is to air your quilt on a regular basis. Simply hang it outside in the fresh air if possible or if the weather doesn’t allow this, hang it indoors.
Tips for Washing Woollen Quilts
Even if you do air your quilt regularly, there will come a time when you need to wash your doona, particularly if it’s subject to spills or soiling. While in the past, this may have involved an expensive trip to your local dry-cleaning company; with the new washable quilts you can now clean them at home.
The best way to wash your doona is to follow the care instructions on the label, setting your machine to the wool or hand wash cycle. Use a detergent that’s specially formulated for wool wherever possible or a non-biological washing powder or liquid.
Once the washing cycle is finished, allow your doona to dry naturally, preferably outdoors. And, always make sure that the quilt is fully dry before using it again. Sometimes the outer cover may feel dry before the inner layers of wool have fully dried out.
If you can’t fit your quilt into your washing machine you may have to take it to a local laundromat or laundry to have it cleaned.
