If a country of over 1.25 Billion people loves cricket more than anything else, you got to believe that cricket is more than just a game in India. You could justify yourself by saying that cricket has turned out to be a religion, where the ‘master blaster’ of the world- Sachin Tendulkar has been named as the ‘God of the Cricket’.

It is the impact of this belief and the emotions of the people that every single match of cricket receives much of applause from the people of India. If it is match with the Indian team being one of the conflicting sides, you could expect the Indian crowd with their tricolor flags in huge numbers, at almost any part of the world.

Be it any form of the game- Test Match, One Day International or T20, Indians have much of enthusiasm for even the country-specific matches. And when the enthusiasm is to such a great extent, you could yourself imagine the kind of crowd that would turn up to see a cricket match that is held in India.

India has various prominent cricket hosting stadiums that are known all around the world for the kind of pitches they have and the kind of crowd that erupts for the matches. These are also some of the biggest stadiums in the world and have seen the rise of innumerable legends from their childhood to history.

Prominent Cricket Stadiums Of India:

Some of the world-acclaimed cricket stadiums in India are as follows:

·         Eden Gardens, Kolkata: This one is probably one of the most iconic cricket stadiums, not only in India, but also in the world. Located in the beautiful city of Kolkata, also known to be hometown of ‘Prince’ Sourav Ganguly, the Eden Garden Stadium is well known for the large capacity of crowd that it could hold. The current capacity of the stadium is about 90,000 people. It was established in the year 1864 and had undergone some great changes since then. With the kind of scenario and love that people have in this stadium, it is one of the dreams of an emerging Indian player to play on the turf of Eden Gardens Stadium.

·         Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai: The Wankhede Stadium of Mumbai is also a well acclaimed cricket ground that fascinates cricketers from all around the globe. The stadium is named after the politician and Mumbai Cricket Association’s Secretary Mr. S K Wankhede and has a crowd capacity of about 45,000 people. Since its commencement in 1975, it is one of the most popular stadiums in India, which has seen the first feet of cricketing legends such as Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar etc, who rose to touch the stars.

·         M. Chinnaswamy Stadium: If you wish to see the rains of fours and sixes, there could be no better stadium in the world than M. Chinnaswamy Stadium of Bangalore, Karnataka. Established in the year 1969, it has a crowd capacity of about 36,000 to 40,000 people. The stadium is well known for its small boundaries and has become a world-acclaimed ground for hosting T20 and IPL matches. Even the tests and the ODIs too are hosted with the same interest by the ground.

·         Feroz Shah Kotla Ground: Feroz Shah Kotla Ground is situated in New Delhi- the capital city of India. Having established in the year 1883, this stadium is also one of the oldest playing grounds of the world. It has a seating capacity of about 55,000 people and is the same venue where Anil Kumble made the record of taking the entire 10 wickets in a single inning. This stadium is also the home turf to Indian legends such as Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli.

·         Green Park Stadium: Situated in Kanpur- the commercial capital of Indian state Uttar Pradesh, Green Park stadium is also one of the oldest home ground of the Indians. It hosted its first match in the year 1952 and since then, it is fairly used for hosting all formats of the game, including the IPLs. Green Park stadium has a crowd capacity of about 45,000 people.

·         Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium: This cricket stadium is situated in the city of Hyderabad in the newest Indian state Telangana. The stadium is one of the newest ones in India, which was built in the year 2004, but hosted its first game in the year 2010. Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium of Hyderabad has a crowd capacity of about 55,000 and has gained much of prominence in the latest seasons of IPL. However, India- the home team has never won even a single international match on this ground. Out of 3 ODI and 1 test played at this venue, Indians have lost all the three ODIs and the test resulted in a draw.

·         M.A. Chidambaram Stadium: The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, or better known as the Chepauk Stadium, situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu is again one of the oldest cricketing grounds in India. It hosted its first match in the year 1934 and it also marked the first ever Indian test victory against England in the year 1952. Currently, it has a crowd holding capacity of about 38,000 people and has seen some major changes in its structure since it was constructed.

·         Sardar Patel Stadium: The Sardar Patel Stadium situated in Ahmedabad is the largest stadium of Gujarat State in India. It was built in the year 1982 and saw its first match in the year 1984. It has more of a pitch that suits the bowlers and hence you could prepare to view the swinging capability of the pacers at this venue. It has a seating capability of about 50,000 people and is planned to extend to about 1, 00,000 in the year till 2019.

·         Barabati Stadium: The Barabati cricket stadium is situated in Cuttack, Odisha and is operated by Odisha Cricket stadium. It had its first test played in the year 1987 between India and Sri Lanka. Though, it has hosted only 2 test matches and is now majorly used for the ODIs (18 ODIs played till now at the venue), T20s (only a single international match played) and IPL matches. It has a crowd holding capacity of about 45,000 people.

·         Sawai Mansingh Stadium: Sawai Mansingh Stadium is situated in Jaipur Rajasthan, and is named after the former ruler of the region. This stadium is operated by Rajasthan Cricket Association and was established in the year 1969. It is a small stadium with crowd capacity of about 23,000 people and is mostly used for the IPL matches.

·         IS Bindra Stadium: Run by Punjab Cricket Association, the IS Bindra Stadium of Mohali, Punjab, hosts all the formats of the games and is one of the popular cricketing grounds in India. It was established in 1993 and has a crowd bearing capacity of about 26,000 people.
