A Summary Of Lawrence School
History of Lawrence School
In the year 1852, George & Mary Lawrence made a deed of a tract of land to Waukesha School panel for $5 and the purpose was setting up a school on Saylesville Road, which lies 3 miles to the south of the Waukesha village. Original school had been put up in that very year. It happened to be a one-roomed frame structure measuring approximately 20/ 30 feet, having windows on each of the sides along with an entrance at the front side of the building. Blackboards were what separated single room during those days. The plumbing included a well located in the playground part and couple of outhouses for boys and girls respectively. With the passage of time farms developed around this school and number of students present grew. The School panel later procured supplementary land for $10 and this developed the school grounds to just about half an acre. When the Great Depression took place, a schoolhouse of brick was put up on the site and it included five rooms along with a basement. The fresh school commenced in 1931 and kept on educating children in Waukesha till 1976.
The school stayed unoccupied and unused for a period of eight years. The windows were cracked, and the ceiling and floor were falling down when Prohealth Care bought it during 1984 and turned to into a suburban treatment facility. Initially it was named Lawrence House and soon after The Lawrence Center. During 2009, this center was shut down and would stay unoccupied till 2013. In the month of May of 2013 the modernization of the facility was initiated to restore the original objective of Lawrence Center and it has become Lawrence School once more.
