Creating a box cushion right at home is no Gargantuan task if you are quite an expert DIY-er and can gather a few materials & tools. Before beginning with the task, you will, of course, need to collect the essentials required for the projects. So let's begin by making a list of those items :

Materials

  • Upholstery foam, which you will be able to get from any firm selling cut to measure Dunlop foam in Sydney
  • Fabric - Drapery fabrics, duck cloth or canvas work best due to their durability.
  • Hook & loop tape.
  • Yardstick or measuring tape.
  • Coordinating thread

Begin by measuring the Dunlop foam that is supposed to be enveloped in fabric. Add exactly 1 inch to the overall width and length for seam allowance. If you wish to give the foam a fuller appearance, cover it using Dacron batting.

Add 1 inch to the width of the foam and use that measurement to cut a fabric strip. Its length should be just as much as the measurement from middle of the side, across front edge, right up to middle of the opposite side augmented by 1 inch. Cut out two more strips of the same length, but their width should be half the thickness of your foam plus 1½ inches. It would result in a flap where the fabric pieces can be overlapped and then secured using hook & loop tape.

Now start with the 2 strips and fold a long edge over each piece exactly by 1 inch. Sew them in place. Next, cut pieces of the hook & loop tape. Stitch them just along the entire length of each piece. Make sure you sew one side of the tape to front part of the flap and another side to the back.

Press the pieces of hook & loop tape together for layering the flap pieces. Pin the small edges of both the remaining strip and the flap together. Then sew using ½ inch seam. Now repeat the same process for the rest of the piece.

Pull apart the hook & loop tape to open the flap. Turn the right side of the cover out and insert your foam into it. Your box cushion is almost ready. If you wish to secure the foam, you can stitch a zipper near the opening of the cover.

So what are you waiting for? Go and make your own box cushion today.
