A Short Guide to Five Paragraph Essay Writing For USA Students

Five paragraph essay writing is commonly assigned to students to help them structure and organize their ideas and opinions in academic writing. This paragraph should consist of the weakest argument, weakest example and weakest illustration. The topic of the paragraph should be introduced in first or second sentence of the paragraph. The last sentence in this paragraph should consist of concluding hook that makes readers aware about the final major point of the paper. This hook also leads into the last paragraph. 

The paragraph should have the following elements: 

•  An illustration to the pattern you used in the introductory paragraph

 

•  A restatement of the thesis statement in other words 

•  A summarized form of three points used in three main body paragraphs 

•  A final sentence that gives you readers to think further or leave a deep impression on them

Transition means the link between the paragraphs. You need to have a connection within your paragraphs, especially main body paragraphs. It is not wise to jump from one paragraph to another, without making a link between them. You need to use concluding sentence of one paragraph and the beginning of the next to show the relationship between two ideas or paragraphs. 

Between each paragraph and the one that follows, you need a transition sentence. The transition sentence can be placed either at the beginning of the next paragraph or at the end of first paragraph; it can even be a little of both. To reflect the relation between two paragraphs, think about words and phrases that compare and contrast: 

• If the first paragraph talks about pro and the second about con, you could use ‘on the other hand….’ 

• If the second paragraph describes something of greater significance, use ‘more importantly…’ 

• An earlier historical example, ‘even before (topic in paragraph 1)’

• A different kind of consideration etc. 

Think about your paragraph topics until you find the most relevant links between them. You also need some transition from last paragraph to conclusion. The best way to sum up your third body paragraph is to remind the reader what you have said in the earlier paragraphs. You don’t need to restate the ideas clearly, but you can refer to in brief or example a character as a way of pulling your ideas together and letting know the readers you are getting ready for conclusion.
