A Quick Look at the Best Android Waterproof Phones
Technological advancements are coming in every single flagship phone release. We’ve seen amazing innovations including quad-core processors, 450+ PPI displays, and now we have a premium waterproof phone in the form of the Sony Xperia Z.
This article will look at why we have waterproof phones emerging on the market, what the standards are, and then some of the best phones that are waterproof, or at least water-resistant, on the market.
Why do we need waterproof phones
Waterproof phones provide the opportunity to have some peace of mind in the case of any water incident. Apparently 1 in 10 people drop their phone down the toilet at some point in their phone lifetime. Additionally, we live in a rainy country and water is always a potential killer of our phones. Those that work in outdoor situations, particularly by water, such as marine engineers and construction workers, really can benefit from having a rugged mobile phone that can stand the test of all conditions.
In addition, active sports enthusiasts will often find themselves wet through and needing their phone to perform. There are so many reasons that waterproof phones make sense for the standard consumer and those that have special reasons to need one.
The standards for waterproof phones
Phones are judged on their waterproof capacity based on the IP rating system. The IP rating system is the official system for dust and liquid resistance, and is measured on the scale of 0 to 6 for dust and 0 to 8 for liquids. The way you see it displayed is with the letters IP and then two numbers.
For instance, the Sony Xperia Z is IP57. The second digit is the water resistance and the first is the dust resistance. Therefore, the phone on the scale of IP ratings is a 7 on water resistance which means it’s capable of remaining intact and in working order despite being placed into water at a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.
There aren’t many situations where you would need more water resistance than this. So now, let’s have a look at some of the phones that have water resistance as a feature.
Let’s start with the Sony Xperia Z
The Sony Xperia Z has been launched in 2013 and as we saw has an IP57 certification. This means it can be submerged in water for up to a meter for up to 30 minutes. The phone also has a terrific HD screen a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a terrific rear camera offering 13MPs. It lands with the most recent Jelly Bean platform and is frankly a beautiful phone. And it is certainly one of the phones that is taking water resistance and making it sexy. You can wash your phone under the tap without any fear of doing any damage.
The Motorola Defy +
This phone isn’t as high end as the Sony Xperia Z but is still a very interesting phone. It has a water resistant body and can “live” in water for an hour or more. With the 1GHz processor and protection of the screen with Gorilla Glass, it is truly rugged. The camera on it is 5MP and does a reasonable job without being extraordinary. it comes with Ginger Bread Android platform and frankly is a decent offering at the lower end of the market.
The Sony Xperia Go
This phone was announced back in 2012 and was the first phone coming on to the market with waterproofing as a big feature. Testing has demonstrated it can remain in water for 30 minutes and stay functional. It has a dual-core 1GHz processor. A 3.5in display that is scratch-proof and rugged, and sports a decent 5MP camera. It looks quite nice and has enough about it to make it a really decent offering.
The Sony Xperia Acro S
This phone is a good all-rounder that can compete with any of the water-resistant phones. Again it is IP57 certified, meaning it can stay in water for up to 30 minutes. It has dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a very effective 12MP camera with flash. It also comes with auto-focus and has Ice Cream Sandwich as the operating system. The 4.3in display looks clear and crisp and is very effective at what it does.
For me it makes good sense to have a quality camera on your water-resistant phone because it means you can get it out when you are hiking in the rain or in another adverse weather situation. The Sony Xperia Z and the Sony Experia Acro S both have very good camera… so plus marks for them.
The Panasonic Eluga Power
Panasonic are not a main player in the smartphone market but this phone is very good. It has water resistance for up to 30 minutes in submersion, has a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and a camera that is just enough at 8MP. Its 5in display is touchscreen and it has Ice Cream Sandwich running on it.
So there you have it – a look at some of the waterproof phones on the market. No more worrying about getting the phone out when it is raining, or dropping it in the snow. If its dirty you can wash it in a bowl or under the tap, and you can in general have greater piece of mind that your prixed possession is going to survive the elements up to your contract renewal.
