Daybeds have long been in use by many people as space efficient and convenient means for incorporating additional sleeping area within a room. With a trundle, it provides an extra sleeping space that can be easily stored away when not needed. These trundles can be divided into two categories in terms of their availability. Between them, the most common one is the low profile bed, which can be stored away when not in use and is named so because it stays close to the ground. It also comes with casters or wheels so that the user can roll it out easily. The second type can be unfolded and popped up as high as the daybed mattress itself.

Trundles generally do not need an individual string box or any other kind of foundation to accommodate the mattress. They instead have a link spring which consists of metal rails, multiple sturdy metal supports and uniformly spaced metal links that offer some flexibility and enough support to the mattress.

A daybed may also come with drawers and such a unit is called ‘captain’s bed’. The term has originated from the need of storage within the tight confinements on a board ship. Space aboard a ship is something extremely precious, so sailors and shipbuilders became adept at creating storage space. Earlier, a captain’s cabin was no larger than a big closet and even a bed inside it was considered wastage of space if no storage provisions were made underneath it. The drawers were built for accommodating the storage requirements of officers who had more privilege than the rest of the crew.

Furniture makers manufacturing daybeds in Northern Beaches often design the trundles to look like drawers, so that the extra sleeping space remains perfectly concealed from sight. Sometimes a skirt-like cover may also be used for hiding the trundle. The common bedding essentials include sheets and pillows, which may be used for sleeping as well as decoration. The pillows can be either large or small, but large ones are not practical to sleep on. They, however, are very welcoming and comfortable to lean against. An assortment of small pillows can do a very good job at delivering comfort and also appropriate for sleeping. Sham pillows matching the flat or fitted sheet can aid in coordinating the theme of the bedding and the room together. Oblong or small neck cushions can also be great additions for creating snug resting or sleeping places.
