A Few Things You Will Like To Know About Oil Flooded Compressor

by Audry Campbell Writer
With the introduction of new advanced technology, advanced van air systems and new compressors – modern compressed air technology is now economical and affordable as never before. As per a recent study conducted by the European Union – 18% of the total industrial electric energy consumption is for the purpose of air pressure generation and the study also showed that with proper application of the appropriate technology and by making the systems more efficient, it is possible to save at last one third of the electricity that is consumed.

Primarily two types of compressors are available in the market, oil flooded compressor and water injected Screw compressors. The basic difference between the two is in their construction. Oil flooded compressors come with a gearbox with oil inside it two stage air end. On the other hand water injected compressors is completely oil free for water is used in it instead of oil. Finding the right compressor is of elementary importance for a smooth running compressed air system and compressors manufactured by Boge compressor one of the leading compressor manufacturers in the world can be a good choice in this regard.

Oil flooded compressors are widely used in chemical and petrochemical refining, oil patching and also in gas processing plants. As a matter of fact the geometry of an oil compressor is not at all easy for visualization and most people using these compressors have nothing more than a vague idea about the working process of these things. Apart from regular ammonia refrigerants, hydrocarbons and hydro fluorocarbons, natural gas, landfill gas and helium is also used in this type of compressors.

Any typical oil flooded compressor consists of two bearing mounted rotors – one male and the other female. These rotors have a basic screw thread shape with variable number of lobes. In this type of compressors, it is the male rotor to which the driving devices are generally connected and the female rotor is driven by the male through an oil film. In low or medium pressure compressors a six or seven lobe female rotor is driven by four or five lobed male one that keeps the speed of female rotor to some extent lower. Higher rotor speeds can also be generated by connecting the driver to the female rotor.

The oil flooded compressor is mostly used in industries like food and beverage, wine, dairy, paint, metal and also in electronic industry for a variety of service as well as industrial applications. Easy and simple maintenance, long life span, MEPS compliant motors, simple operation and high energy efficiency are some of the features that have made these compressors a good choice for the above mentioned industries. Oil free water injected compressors use a single stage compression technique and are capable of delivering air compressed up to 1300 kPa g or 189 PSI g. These compressors also come with comparatively higher isothermal efficiency and also a lower specific power of kW/M3/min that allows the compressor to operate even at much cooler temperatures.
