A Brief About Storage Tanks and its Properties

by John Steffen Consultant
Chemical Storage Tanks are the storage containers to keep the bulk chemical safe without any damage caused to the surrounding and to the chemical. Mainly there are three types of chemical storage tanks:

  1. Stainless steel tanks.
  2. Fiberglass tanks.
  3. Polyethylene tanks.

Stainless still tanks being the most durable ones but they are not compatible with most of the chemicals and are expensive too. Fiberglass tanks are viable for some applications but it contains seams which can leak hence it requires more maintenance and are vulnerable. Whereas Polyethylene tanks are available in both linear and cross-linked polyethylene, are versatile and easily available in the market.

Which is the best chemical storage tank?

It basically depends on the kind of chemical you're storing. In order to increase the performance and longevity of the chemical, it's important to consider the nuances of the chemical being stored. If you select a tank based on its size, material and capacity, ignoring the chemical used in the tank; you'll risk the no optimal performance of the tank. There are some chemicals who require specific kind of insulation for outdoor storage and others require double wall solutions or fittings.

Galvanized Tanks are also used to store oil, gas, industrial liquids and water. These tanks are more economical for storing liquids. Zinc used in galvanizing process corrodes in preference to steel and protects the steel. The corrosion products of zinc are deposited on the steel resealing it from atmosphere and therefore preventing corrosion.

Water Storage Tanks are the containers for storing water for domestic and industrial purposes. Water storage tanks are available in various shapes and sizes; vertical, horizontal, underground and potable, made from plastic, steel, fiberglass, stone or concrete. Water leakage and corrosion as well as bacterial growth are few threats to the tank. So using galvanized water tank is a smart choice as it prevents corrosion.

There are other types of storage tanks to store organic liquids, non-organic liquids, vapors. Basically there are 8 types of tanks to store liquids:

  1. Fixed - roof tanks.
  2. External floating roof tanks.
  3. Internal floating roof tanks.
  4. Domed external floating roof tanks.
  5. Horizontal tanks.
  6. Pressure tanks.
  7. Variable vapor space tanks.
  8. LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanks.

While steel remains one of the most popular choices for tanks, there are other materials increasing in popularity as GRP, Thermoplastic, Polyethylene and fiberglass. They usually offer lower build costs and great chemical resistance.

Since most liquids can spill, evaporate or seep through even the smallest opening, special consideration must be made for their safe and secure handling. There have been numerous catastrophic failures of storage tanks due to poor design and construction, thin walls, not testing the tank before using, corrosion problems or faulty welding.

So while looking for a chemical storage tank or water storage tank keep all these factors in mind to prevent them. Choose the tank wisely else it can cost you a lot more than it's worth.
