9 Fast and Easy Tips for Loading a Moving Truck

by Kevin Smith Author

Loading up your moving van or truck is an essential step of residential moving in Marietta, GA. Handling a move on your own means being forced to pack, organize, and load up a moving vehicle with all of your goods, and hopefully in a single trip. Whether you're loading up the back of your SUV, a rental truck, or a van, there are a few tips that can make this difficult process much easier on you. If you insist on handling your own move, be sure to consider these tips to avoid a disaster like an injury or broken valuables.

  • Remember to lift with your knees, not your back. Never pick up anything heavier than pillows without bending your knees first. Don't bend at the waist to stoop over and lift objects. You can hurt your back muscles and shoulders.
  • Try to wrap goods that you can't pack into boxes. This can prevent them from being scuffed or scraped. Lamps and certain art work, for example, are difficult to box up.
  • You should also wrap goods to prevent them from penetrating nearby boxes or bubble wrap. Sharp metallic edges can puncture objects they're stacked beside when the vehicle is in motion.
  • Apply a temporary cushion liner to the sides and bottom of the moving vehicle. This will prevent scrapes and scratches to delicate furniture. It also covers up the greasy and dirty door jambs.
  • Load the moving vehicle strategically. Start by loading everything to the back wall of the vehicle, then load in layers until you reach the front of the vehicle.
  •  Do not overload a moving vehicle. Not only is this bad for your valuables, it's bad for the vehicle. Even certain moving vans can only handle a certain maximum weight before they're dangerous to drive.
  • You can prop up delicate possessions between safe and sturdy ones. For example, if you're worried about a box of electronics rattling, either pin it against the wall of the vehicle with 3 other heavy boxes or surround the box on all 4 sides with boxes that are less likely to move.
  • You should also be strategic to avoid squishing your valuables. Don't place heavy boxes on top of furniture, and stack all boxes in the moving truck with the heaviest load on the bottom and the lightest on top.
  •  Never stack furniture if you can avoid it. Furniture is typically designed to hold human weight or the weight of books and other light cargo. They're not designed to hold other furniture.

Use these tips next time you need to move, and remember that you can always rely on professionals for residential moving in Marietta, GAto make your move stress-free.
