Eco-friendly Biodegradable Vertical Drain PVD | DAEHAN i.m.

DAEHAN i.m. introduces Bio Verti-Drain®, an innovative biodegradable Prefabricated Vertical Drain (PVD) developed for environmentally responsible soft ground improvement. This next-generation product reproduces the proven performance of conventional Verti-Drain® systems while eliminating long-term environmental impact. After installation and soil consolidation, Bio Verti-Drain® naturally degrades in soil without leaving behind any residual plastic materials.

As the first biodegradable vertical drain to receive the “Eco-Label” certification from the ministry of environment of Korea, Bio Verti-Drain® marks a breakthrough in sustainable geotechnical engineering and green construction technology.

Eco-Friendly Composition

Bio Verti-Drain® is composed of Poly Butylene Succinate (PBS)—a high-performance, aliphatic polyester—and Polylactic Acid (PLA) derived from cornstarch sources. Both materials are fully biodegradable, decomposing into water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) under natural soil conditions after the ground consolidation process is complete.

Unlike bio-disintegrable materials that only partially degrade and leave microplastics behind, Bio Verti-Drain® completely decomposes, offering a truly sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic PVDs used in ground improvement works.

Performance and Durability

Following installation, Bio Verti-Drain® maintains its mechanical strength and drainage performance for up to three years, ensuring full consolidation of soft ground. After fulfilling its function, it biodegrades naturally through microbiological degradation and hydrolysis processes, returning safely to the environment.

Performance testing according to ASTM D6918 has confirmed that Bio Verti-Drain® retains an outstanding discharge capacity of not less than 25 cm³/s under 300 kPa pressure after 100 days. Additionally, it demonstrates high tensile strength exceeding 2,000 N/full width, ensuring excellent structural stability during installation and operation.

Superior Filtration Efficiency

The filter of Bio Verti-Drain® provides excellent filtration and permeability characteristics, effectively preventing fine soil particles from entering the water channels of the drain. With an Apparent Opening Size (AOS) smaller than 75 µm and permeability greater than 1 × 10⁻² cm/s, the system ensures consistent drainage flow and long-term performance throughout the consolidation process.
