Keyless Bushings from SUNG-IL MACHINERY CO., LTD clamp shafts and hubs together, offering various sizes, materials, and surface treatments.

What Is a Keyless Bushing (A.P. Lock)?

A keyless bushing, also known as an A.P. Lock, is a mechanical power transmission component designed to clamp a shaft and hub (such as a pulley, sprocket, gear, or coupling) simultaneously by applying surface pressure. Unlike traditional keyed interfaces, the keyless bushing uses frictional force over a controlled interference interface to lock the two components together, enabling torque transmission without stress concentrations or backlash.

How It Works

  • Surface Pressure Clamping:

The A.P. Lock creates a tight contact pressure between the shaft and hub through a tapered surface interface (or similar design). When the locking device is actuated, radial pressure is applied, generating sufficient friction to transmit torque.

  • Elimination of Keys / Keyways:

Because the system relies on friction rather than a physical key, there is no need for machining a keyway in the shaft or hub. This reduces stress concentration, simplifies assembly, and improves alignment.

  • Simultaneous Clamping of Shaft and Hub:

The design ensures that both shaft and hub are gripped evenly and at the same time, preventing relative motion or slippage.

Typical Applications

Keyless bushings like the A.P. Lock are commonly used in:

  • Pulleys, sheaves, and timing belt drives.
  • Gears, sprockets, and couplings.
  • Rotating equipment such as fans, blowers, and pumps.
  • Drives in factory automation, conveyor systems, and machine tools.
