In recent years, scammers have become increasingly sophisticated, using legitimate tools like ScreenConnect (also known as ConnectWise Control) to gain unauthorized access to victims' computers. ScreenConnect is a legitimate remote desktop application commonly used by IT professionals for technical support. However, its powerful features make it an attractive tool for cybercriminals when misused.

The scam typically begins with a phone call, email, or pop-up message claiming there's a serious issue with your computer—perhaps a virus or a compromised bank account. The scammer, posing as a representative from a trusted company like Microsoft, your bank, or an antivirus provider, urges immediate action. They then instruct you to download ScreenConnect so they can "resolve the issue."

Once connected, scammers can control your computer, install malware, access personal files, and even initiate financial transactions. They may request payment for bogus services or steal sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, or banking credentials.

Victims often don’t realize they’ve been scammed until it’s too late—after money has been withdrawn or identities stolen. Since ScreenConnect allows for full remote access, scammers can even lock users out of their own devices.

To protect yourself:

  • Never allow remote access to your computer unless you initiated contact with a verified, trusted source.

  • Be skeptical of unsolicited calls or pop-ups claiming urgent technical issues.

  • Verify independently by contacting the company directly through official channels.

  • Uninstall any unfamiliar remote access software you did not intentionally install.

ScreenConnect itself is not malicious, but when in the wrong hands, it becomes a powerful weapon for fraud. Stay informed and cautious to protect your digital security. If you believe you've been targeted, disconnect your internet, uninstall any remote access apps, and contact your bank and local authorities immediately.

Don't forget that some of those scammers are right here in APSense searching for victims.
