Sahih

Chapter
19: As-Sahw (forgetfulness) in prayer and prostrating to compensate for it.
Yahya ibn Yahya narrated to
us, saying: I read to Malik from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd
al-Rahman, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him
and grant him peace, said: “When one of you stands to pray, Satan comes to him
and confuses him until he does not know how much he has prayed. So if one of
you finds that, let him prostrate twice while sitting.” (Sahih

call to prayer is completed, he comes forward. When he is rewarded for it, He
turned away, and when the time for reward was over, he would come and think
about it between the person and himself, saying, “Remember such and such,
remember such and such.” Because he did not remember until a man would not know
how much he had prayed. So if one of you does not know how much he has prayed,
then let him prostrate twice while sitting.” (Sahih
