8 Vegan Cruise Vacations to visit now

by Jeremy Banks Evolutesix

With the growing concern over health and fitness, as well as continued interest in plant-based diets among people of all ages and backgrounds, it makes sense that vegan cruise vacations have been gaining popularity.

Vegan cruises are a wonderful way to explore the world while eating healthy, organic vegan cuisine. While many conventional cruises offer only one or two vegan dishes on their menus, select voyage lines that are dedicated to providing an entirely plant-based experience for their guests.

There are many great vegan cruises to choose from, but these 10 vegan cruise destinations will leave you feeling like you’re on vacation while connecting with others who share your passion for a cruelty-free lifestyle.

1. Adriatic Sea

Cruising through the Adriatic Sea is one of the most popular ways to explore Mediterranean countries like Italy and Croatia. Italian food is usually very vegan-friendly, but if you want to be sure that your cruise goes through all of the best spots, look for a vegan ship. There are several different cruises that take this route.

2. Alaska

If you’re searching for a vegan cruise, Alaska is the perfect place to look. Every year, over 100,000 take a voyage on Alaskan waters. As with any major tourist destination, there are plenty of options when choosing your travel company.

Many popular cruise companies offer vegan meal options upon request and have expanded their menus in recent years to include alternatives like vegan tacos and curry dishes. However, the problem that remains is that of dining at ports along the way. If you have strict dietary requirements or allergies, you may be concerned about being able to eat while visiting local restaurants during your travels. Luckily, many ports in Alaska offer robust menus catered specifically toward vegans and vegetarians.

3. Caribbean

The Caribbean is known for its beautiful beaches and laid back vibe. You can explore the islands or enjoy days lounging on the beach. Many cruises there include a stop in Jamaica—the perfect place to hear some reggae, do some scuba diving, or visit the rainforest.

Other stops might include Havana, Cuba, where you can take in the local culture and witness history at sites like Castillo de Morro, Catedral de San Cristóbal de la Habana (Havana Cathedral), and Finca Vigía.

For a more active vacation, there are plenty of opportunities for fishing on these cruises. And if you want to unwind from your busy day, cruise ships offer spa services to help you relax after a long day sightseeing or enjoying the nightlife.

4. Danube River

On the Danube River—which is the second longest river in Europe, flowing from Germany through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, the Ukraine and Moldova- you'll pass through some of Eastern Europe's most beautiful cities.

The Danube is a major shipping route for cargo and cruise ships. Cruises along this river typically run between Budapest to Vienna. In addition to passing through these two large European cities—Budapest has one of the largest vegan communities in Europe while Vienna has a number of popular vegan restaurants -- you'll also get to visit many smaller towns along the way.

5. Galapagos Islands

The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago of volcanic islands located around the equator in the Pacific Ocean. The islands are part of Ecuador and a must-visit for any vegan cruise vacationer interested in wildlife, nature, and geography.

This is one of the world’s premier wildlife destinations and you'll be able to see animals there that you won't find anywhere else including sea lions, marine iguanas, numerous types of tropical birds, giant tortoises, blue footed boobies, albatrosses and much more. You'll also have a chance to visit Darwin's research station—the place where he wrote about his famous theory on evolution—and observe some of his findings for yourself!

You can go diving or snorkeling along the coast as well as hike, bike or enjoy other land based activities like trekking through dense jungles or visiting active volcanoes.

Located just north of Antarctica in the South Atlantic Ocean is another beautiful destination sure to please any vegan traveler looking for a cruise vacation: The Falkland Islands.

6. The Mediterranean

The Mediterranean Sea is a large body of water located between Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. It's the largest inland sea in the world, popular for its mild climate and unique geography. It experiences humid summers and warm winters, making it a great place to get away from seasonal weather fluctuations—and a big tourist draw.

In addition to an ideal climate, what makes the Mediterranean a top vacation destination is its diverse culture. There are more than 20 countries with coastline along the Mediterranean, each with their own distinct customs and histories that have developed over time due to trade and migration patterns throughout history. From olive oil production in Greece to cheese making in Italy to spice trading in Morocco, there's an abundance of cultural activity around food that has brought millions of people together over centuries—and it's still going strong today!

7. Northern Europe

Northern Europe, with its picturesque cliffs, dense woods, and quaint villages, is a popular destination for vegans looking to relax on a cruise. In addition to the scenic views and cooler weather, Northern Europe is home to many cities that are extremely vegan-friendly. From Amsterdam to Oslo and Stockholm, you'll find plenty of restaurants offering delicious vegan food.

Most cruises through Norway and other nearby countries offer excursions like hiking or sightseeing at historical sites. You can also catch some incredible sunsets over the North Sea during your evenings on deck. Northern European cruises tend to last about 10 days, which gives you plenty of time for shore excursions and lounging in the sun before returning home.

8. St. Lawrence River & Great Lakes

The St. Lawrence River and Great Lakes region is home to some of the most gorgeous riverscapes in North America. An ideal departure point for this trip is Montreal, Canada, a diverse and cosmopolitan city with plenty of accommodation options for vegans. As you cruise along the St. Lawrence River, take in sights such as the Thousand Islands, which are actually composed of 1,864 islands that straddle the U.S.-Canada border!

This region boasts a rich history and culture originating from Indigenous peoples and European settlers alike, so while traveling through the Great Lakes region you'll also be learning about multiple cultures—an added bonus if you're always hungry to know more about other people's ways of life! Other highlights include visiting some vegan national parks the Rideau Canal and Niagara Escarpment, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to their natural beauty and cultural significance.
