7 Ways to Prepare For Your Acupuncture Treatment

by Dillon Patterson Article Publisher

Acupuncture is a healing and relaxation method that originated in China around 2,500 years ago. While there are religious and spiritual aspects to it, many Western practitioners believe the practice releases endorphins and increases blood flow to relax and heal the body.

Although acupuncture is growing more popular as a Western medicine alternative or complement, many newcomers still have questions about the practice and how it’s done. We understand that there may be a bit of apprehension about your first few appointments, so we’re here to offer you tips to help you get ready.

Dress for the occasion

While you don’t usually need to undress for your appointment, we will need to access areas of your skin that are likely to be covered by clothing. This is much easier to do if we can work around your clothes to reach the puncture points. That’s why we recommend you wear loose-fitting clothing to your appointment.

Plus, you’ll likely feel much more relaxed than if you were constricted with tight clothing!

Don’t come hungry

Acupuncture is supposed to be relaxing, but you won’t enjoy it as much if you’re constantly thinking ahead to lunch or dinner. We almost always recommend you have a snack or a light meal before your appointment.

Conversely, just as not eating enough can hinder your results, so can eating too much. Rather than having a big, greasy feast before your appointment, consider a lighter, healthier alternative to avoid stomach problems.

Expect embarrassing questions

Just as you should expect questions when visiting your doctor, we’re probably going to ask you some questions you might find a little awkward before your acupuncture appointment. These questions allow us to diagnose you and create a treatment plan that will help find what illnesses you have. If we don’t know the answers to these questions, we may not be able to provide the best treatment for your specific needs.

Be honest

When we ask you those questions, put aside your embarrassment. Yes, the questions are sensitive in nature, but we ask them for a reason. It’s important you not only answer them honestly, but that you also don’t falsify any information on your medical history and check-in forms.

The more honest you are and the more details you provide to us, the better we’re able to diagnose and assist you with your ailments!

Drink water

This is good life advice in general, so you’ve probably heard it before. But, once again, stay hydrated before your appointment. That being said, if you’ve been hydrating in preparation for your appointment, please take the time to use the restroom before we begin. Squirming in the chair is not a great way to spend your appointment!

Avoid alcohol and drugs

Alcohol and other drugs alter your body, can dehydrate you, and can mess with your healing and relaxation during your appointment. So if you have an appointment scheduled, please try to refrain from partaking in alcohol and drugs for at least 12 hours before and after your appointment.

Relax

Most importantly, acupuncture just doesn’t work the same way if you aren’t relaxed. By implementing breathing and relaxation techniques before, during, and after your appointment, you keep your muscles and nerves more receptive to the treatment. If you’re nervous around needles, we’ll help you to relieve some jitters before beginning the treatment.

Additionally, using the tips we’ve just given you can help you better prepare and have a much more positive experience.

Acupuncture doesn’t have to be stressful. It’s a powerful healing and relaxation tool that can be used as an alternative to many Western treatments, or in conjunction with them. If you’ve been considering acupuncture, call us! We have answers to just about any of your questions and information you need to feel more at ease with your treatment.
