6 Tips to Ease the Installation of Extra Large Format Porcelain Tiles

by Sarah B. Marketing Writer | Thinker | Environmentalist

A large number homeowners and interior designers use extra large format tiles to make their space look and feel larger. That’s the magic of large size tiles.

One of the reasons why large size tiles create this illusion is because there are fewer grout lines on the tiled pattern. Your space doesn’t look too busy because of fewer grout lines.

However, with that one big reason to go for large format tiles comes an even bigger concern. And that is, these tiles are always at risk of getting damaged.

In this blog, we will learn some of the best working tips that ease the installation of extra large format tiles. Check out the following pointers –

  1. Prepare perfectly level substrate to install large size tiles. Uneven surface always puts these tiles at risk. If you walk on flooring prepared from large format tiles that has bumpy substrate, you will be damaging the tiles beyond repair. Flat subfloor narrows down the chances of tile damage during and after installation.
  2. Use self-leveling compound to level the bulges and crates on the subfloor. Allow the compound to set properly before placing tiles.
  3. Dry install the tiles following your layout idea. This will help determine the tiles that you will need to cut. This will also allow you to make last minute changes in your tile placement plan, if required. You will also be able to determine the areas that are uneven and require more leveling.
  4. These are heavy tiles, which you have to pick and work with carefully to avoid damages and injuries. One safe way is to, pick and put these tiles in upside down, front side down.
  5. Once mortar has been applied, all you have to do is to pick the tile and place it slowly over the mortar. Take help from an assistant, if the tile feels too heavy to pick.
  6. After placing tiles, beat them with the help of a rubber hammer. Doing that, ensure that the tiles are installed in uniform height.

Once the installation is done, wait for the 24 to 36 hours before grouting the joints of your extra large format tiles.
