renting a car is one of the best ways to see as much as possible. We recommend
renting a car in Oman to have the freedom to explore at your own pace and
discover all that the country has to offer. We found that driving is safe and
easy and we recommend renting a car in Oman. These are our tips for rent a car Muscat to help you with your
trip.
Tips for Rent a car in Muscat
Overall, we found that driving in Oman is easy and convenient. We find
great roads, cheap fuel and a high level of driving.
Why rent a car in Muscat?
From the historic Muscat to the beauty of Jebel Shams and the natural
wonders of the Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve, Wadi Shab and the Bimmah sink, Oman
is breathtaking and there are so many amazing places to explore. Outside
Muscat, public transport is limited, so most visitors pick up a rented car and
drive on their own or use private taxis/drivers to explore the country.
Renting a car and driving alone is a cheaper option and we always prefer the flexibility of working at our schedule.
Oman is by far one of the easiest countries in which we have rented and
driven a car, and we recommend renting it if you feel comfortable driving. The
roads are of high quality, the driving standards are generally good and the
fuel is extremely cheap (compared to the United Kingdom and Ireland anyway!).
We loved having a rental car to explore. It allowed us to travel at our own
pace, visit unusual places and, in general, make the most of our time in Oman.
1. Book your rental
car in Muscat
Renting a car in Oman can be relatively cheap. Be sure to shop around
and reserve your rental car in advance at the best price and ensure high season
availability.
2. Can I drive a
rental from the UAE to Oman?
Some of the leading car rental companies refuse to allow UAE rentals to
move across the border to Oman. If you want to drive from the United Arab
Emirates to Oman, then Dollar Rent a Car is probably the best option. Be sure
to verify that it is still possible to take a rental from the United Arab
Emirates to Oman before traveling.
3. Rental Eligibility
Most rental companies require that drivers be at least 25 years old and
have had a license for at least one year to rent a car in Oman. Some rental
companies rent to people from 21 to 24 years old, but there is a significant
excess to pay in case of an accident.
4. International
driver's license
We understand that an international driver's license is required for drivers
with licenses from countries that use the non-Roman alphabet. Be sure to check
the latest rules before traveling.
There is a lot of parking in Oman and everything is free. We had trouble
finding parking spaces in some places:
• It is often difficult to get parking at Mutrah Corniche, as it is
popular for both locals and tourists and the souk is a great attraction. It may
be easier to take a taxi than to drive.
• In Wadi Bani Khalid on weekends. You may find yourself parking a short
distance and walking towards the entrance.
Be sure not to park in front of public buildings, as this is prohibited
in Oman.
5. Speed limits and
cameras
At the time of writing, the speed limits are 120 km / h on highways, 90
km / h on open roads and between 40 km / h and 80 km / h in urban areas. Be
careful as there are speed cameras everywhere. We saw a lot of fixed speed
cameras on highways, as well as some mobile speed controls. We often find road
stops as well.
6. Parking lot
There is a lot of parking in Oman and everything is free. We had trouble
finding parking spaces in some places:
