6 Tips for Hiring an Electrician that Gets the Job Done

by Shalini Laxmish Digital Marketing Executive
Electrical devices are of paramount importance in our lives, and only an electrician best knows the way around them. However, inviting a stranger home and trusting them with your home’s electrical arrangements might not appeal to many. Also, one can’t figure out if the electrician is skilled at their work and or will safely fix their electrical problems through an advertisement. After all, advertisements are created to attract people and take a call-to-action to book the electrician, plumber or other technicians. And sometimes, there is an unwanted taboo around trusting people in blue collar jobs. So, to remove your scepticism, here are some tips to hire an electrician:

    1. Take references

References are important when you plan to hire someone for an electrician job, and it’s not wrong to ask for them. Generally, a good electrician runs his own business and will have references ready when you ask for them. After all, it is to ensure that the person is qualified to perform the task that you need them to do.

Most blue-collar job aspirants start as assistants and then gradually join a much bigger organisation or set up their independent businesses. When they set up their individual practice, they usually have a list of references to share, ensuring that they get more jobs because of these references.

    2. Reputation

Like in the point above, electricians should have a good reputation within the locality. It is impossible to give untrue reviews about technicians, so if you are choosing an electrician based on his or her reputation, you know that you are only hiring the best candidate. The ideal electrician should have excellent communication skills to converse with homeowners, project owners and estimators. They should be able to complete projects within the stipulated time and solve problems independently and resourcefully. Last but not the least, they must make good decisions at all times.

    3. Check their licence

Ask the electrician for their licence, the lack of which is a big red flag. A licenced electrician is trained to handle all kinds of electrical issues, and one must never hire one who cannot show their credentials. One may even visit the concerned department to know more about the local licence preconditions in your neighbourhood. A valid licence and insurance are one of the essential pre-requirements when looking for those who do electrician jobs in India.

    4. Insurance

Speaking of safety, handling electrical equipment is a matter of extreme caution. Electricians should possess liability insurance, which covers them or anybody else while working on an issue. Every reliable technician in a blue collar job has insurance, hence, ensure that the concerned electrician possesses the same. Ideally, people doing electrician jobs should understand the safety regulations in place and ensure that they comply with the same.

    5. Costs

It’s a known fact that quality equals higher prices. However, check and compare costs before you decide on an electrician, for it’s easy to get cheated. Take references from people in the neighbourhood, and then decide on who can perform the best job at a reasonable cost. In these cases, it’s wise not to make hasty decisions and know exactly who you’re hiring and for how much. If the electrician is a member of a bigger team, you have to figure out labour and other cost estimates as well.

    6. Warranty

Though smaller electrical-based projects can get away without it, choose an electrician with a warranty when hiring for larger jobs. The warranty is a written legal document that states the compensatory action to be taken should any mishap occur while the electrician performs his or her job. Large-scale electrical tasks require a great deal of money, and you must ensure that everything goes well. A good electrician comes on time and works in a detail-oriented manner.

Thus, if you are an electrician, you need to upgrade your technical and business skills before you can start looking for prospects in the blue collar job segments
