If you're considering impact glass replacement for your windows, you likely want to know about costs. Unfortunately, it's impossible to give even a price estimate because many factors must be taken into consideration. What we can tell you is that in Florida, the protection and peace of mind these windows afford are immeasurable.

1. The Framing

Traditional window replacement can sometimes be done with pocket installation. Also known as retrofitting, this is when new windows slide right into existing frames. But if you're outfitting your home for the first time with impact windows, you'll need framing robust enough to hold the glass in place. This generally requires brand new framing.

Without the strength of supporting materials like aluminum or vinyl, Florida storms can push through your entire window. But the combined efficiency of stronger and thicker framing that's better affixed to the glass means more protection against the weather; you can expect a minimum frame depth of 2-3/4 inches with impact windows.

2. The Opening Size

This factor is pretty self-explanatory but also worth mentioning. Impact windows are designed to keep winds at bay and must be manufactured with even greater durability to cover large openings. You can liken these windows to beams; the longer the span, the bigger the beam must be to carry the same load. Because the same concept applies to windows, you'll see a slight price increase for those larger in size.

3. Window Type

Consideration must also be given to the type of window you choose. Examples include:

         Single-hung windows

         Horizontal rollers

         Awnings

         Casements

         Fixed windows

Awnings, casements, and fixed windows cost more because they're comprised of just one piece of glass. Of these, awnings and casements have more hardware and moving parts and therefore run the highest in price. Double-hung windows likewise cost more than their single-hung counterparts because both sashes move.

4. Custom Colors

Tinting your impact windows is a great way to personalize your home's decor. Colors can also increase your privacy and maximize energy efficiency. But because they require special prep to run through the production line, these windows will also demand a slightly higher cost.

5. Professional Labor

Labor involves many tasks, including installation, caulking, cleaning, and removing old windows. A complex project requires even more time and knowledge, meaning you may need to pay a little more. But quality labor is a significant factor in determining how well your windows perform in the coming years. For this reason alone, it's well worth the cost of hiring a professional team.

6. Warranties

When you choose windows with a strong warranty, you're paying for more than the cost of the product and installation; you're also paying for the manufacturer to stand behind its windows. This is enormously beneficial - if anything goes wrong during the life of the warranty, you're saved from paying out-of-pocket.

Impact windows are far more than seasonal products. They make life easier and your home safer; the additional benefits of increased privacy and energy efficiency make these products well worth the initial investment.
