The wardrobe for professional work events is an important occasion. For many professionals, it’s an opportunity to network with people and gain the connections that could lead to promotions or other business ventures.

First impressions mean everything. A well-dressed person will demonstrate a level of class and sophistication. People who are confident in themselves value how they appear in front of others. Conversely, someone that dresses sloppy signals to others that they aren’t willing to put their best foot forward and take the work event seriously enough.

Here are six style tips to help you dress appropriately and make a great first impression for professional work events.

1. Wear Business Professional Attire

Business professional attire is the best option when it comes to professional work events. Consider checking with the organization or committee to see which attire is recommended. It’s much better to overdress than underdress. Business professional clothing is ideal for networking events, job interviews, and other work-related events.

Women that abide by a business professional dress code should wear skirts, slacks, dresses, tidy blouses, blazers, or sharp button-down shirts. Depending on the outfit, consider wearing stockings or nylons. Wear closed-toe shoes with no more than a three-inch heel.

Men should wear a dark-colored suit and tie with a white-button shirt or another light-colored shirt. Make sure to match the belt to the color of the shoes. Always go with a conservative tie and avoid ones with busy patterns or bright colors.

2. Groom Before You Dress

Dressing professionally involves more than wearing appropriate clothes. It also means you need to be well-groomed and presentable. Avoid exotic or flashy haircuts. Many professional settings permit colorful hairstyles but keep them appropriate for your kind of work. Here are other things to consider when grooming and styling for professional events:

  • Nails - Keep nails clean and trim.

  • Shoes - Ensure shoes are polished and unscuffed.

  • Breath - Use fresh flavored mints and gum.

  • Makeup - Wear natural makeup.

  • Cologne or Perfume - Choose light scents or avoid wearing scented products altogether.

3. Know Which Colors to Wear

No colors are completely off-limits. However, when it comes to professional attire, it’s best to stick with a neutral color palette. Formal business suits for men and women tend to be black, gray, tan, brown, or navy blue. Shirts can be lighter in color, such as white, off-white, or light shades of colors. Typically, pops of color can be made with accessories such as shoes and ties. But, it’s much safer to choose subtle colors over bright and bold colors.

4. Wear A Good Watch

Watches can be the perfect professional event accessory and one that everyone notices. Putting on a dress watch can add an elegant accessory that finishes off a suit and tie. Many people like to wear metal or chain link bands or even high-quality Apple watch bands. It can be rude to pull out a mobile device in the middle of a conversation but checking your watch is always a classy move.

5. Don’t Wear Revealing Clothing

Wearing revealing clothing isn’t appropriate in professional settings. It is distracting and gives off the wrong impression to many people. Avoid extremely high heels, short hemlines, plunging necklines, and sheer fabric. Bump up your social and professional reputation in your workplace by dressing with a classy and conservative flair.

6. Don’t Over-Accessorize

Accessories can complete an outfit by tying the entire look together. However, ensure that they are not overpowering and distracting. It’s best to keep accessories minimal and chic. Avoid anything that can be noisy or dangly, which only draws attention. A minimal necklace, a classic pair of studs, or perhaps a chic bracelet can provide a sophisticated aura.
