6 Instant Tips for Safe Internet Browsing

by milton ferrara CEO

Kids and seniors alike tend to be too trusty when it comes to Internet browsing, and it’s safe to say that if you have some of these at home, your PC is most likely infested with hundreds and hundreds of malware and viruses. You’ve either resigned to your fate or got bored of taking your PC to service and repairs every once in a while, so is there nothing you can do to make browsing a bit safer? Of course there is.

Although pop-ups and cyber criminals are practically everywhere, there are means to protect yourself and your PC/laptop from them. We’re here offering 6 instant tips for safe internet browsing, so kick back and dig in.

  1. Get a reliable anti virus software

Starting off easy, the simplest method of avoiding viruses is, you guessed, by getting a good anti virus software. Basically, these programs work automatically and you’ll need to only check them every once in a while. On another hand, good programs don’t even cost that much, and it’s clear that using an anti virus software costs less than taking your entire PC in for service.

  1. Refrain from downloading things as much as you can

Downloading pretty much anything is the fastest way to get your PC some viruses. We highly advise you to download only what you really need, and avoid going on to ‘download sprees’ – websites with cute puppy pictures can get all too alluring in a blink of an eye, but do you really need that image?

  1. Check out the HTTP address before going on the site

The site’s address tells you a volume of things – triple ‘Ws’ indicate that the site is secure, the domain being bought off and registered at the appropriate place. The plain old ‘http’ basically means that the site can, but doesn’t necessarily have to be secure per se.

  1. Be wary of e-mail links

There are people who don’t check their e-mails regularly, but this tip applies to them especially. In most cases, you’ll just check out whatever message you’ve received, but that’s precisely what you shouldn’t do if you want to avoid getting viruses. So called ‘phishing e-mails’ come laden with viruses which are unloaded as soon as you open them.

  1. Manage your passwords

Managing your passwords will keep your personal and online information a bit safer. For instance, the first thing you should do is change the ones you’ve been using over a couple of months. Additionally, don’t use one or two passwords for everything – if hackers get a hold of it, all of your online applications are at risk.

  1. Switch off location markers on your mobile devices

When using your mobile device to browse on the Internet, it’s imperative that you switch off your location marker (or markers). Basically, this doesn’t provide an additional layer of security for you, but it minimizes your online notability. Check out qu'est ce qu'un vpn for more info on that.
