by Executive Protection Institute EPI was founded in 1978

Did you know that the top 1% of Americans have 15 times the wealth of the bottom 50% combined? Having that much money certainly comes with a lot of risks. As more people become wealthier, the demand for bodyguards goes up too. Of course, ensuring the world’s rich and famous safety and security means that VIP or celebrity bodyguards are pretty well compensated for their efforts—$64,700 a year on average!

If you want to learn how to become a bodyguard for the world’s rich and famous, here are five facts you need to know about the industry:

  • Contrary to popular belief, size is not a prerequisite for being a good bodyguard. Softer skills such as communication and diplomacy are more important.
  • Protection duties can be onerous. You can spend hours planning an event only to have everything fall apart at the last minute. Some of your clients may live very chaotic lives, and you must be able to adjust to not knowing where you are, who you are with, or where you will go next. Flexibility, adaptability and the ability to think on one’s feet are indispensable to succeed as a bodyguard.
  • You must also get accustomed to your clients’ whims and fancies. You may get to work with clients who are pretty courteous and appear to be very genuine, decent folks, regardless of their fame or fortune. You may also come across shockingly awful people—people who terminate their employees on the spot because they wore the wrong pair of socks.
  • The adage fosters the male-dominated nature of the executive protection industry that men are stronger than women. However, the demand for female bodyguards has increased significantly in recent years, with the Duchess of Cambridge, David Cameron, Tony Blair, JK Rowling, and Beyoncé all having female guards. Female bodyguards actually have an advantage over male bodyguards in that they appear less imposing and hence draw less attention to those being protected.
  • Whether your rich and famous client is sunbathing on a Caribbean beach, drinking coffee in Marseille, or attending a concert in London, they are never completely safe. Since disasters can strike at any time, you must always be alert. You should also be able to perform CPR, stop the bleeding, apply a tourniquet, and have a basic understanding of first aid. Knowing these basics could help you save your client’s life.

Well, there you have it: five facts you should know about VIP/celebrity bodyguards. Simply reading this blog won’t help. Sign up for a reputable training program at a reputable bodyguard school to find success as a protection officer.
