5 Things To Bear In Mind When Shopping For A Wedding Dress - Sweet Gibraltar Weddings

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

You can’t really ‘wing it’ when it comes to wedding planning, and that is no less the case when it comes to weddings in Gibraltar – as our experienced planners are well-placed to know! It is best to be organised if you are hoping for an enjoyable, seamless experience. After all, wedding planning should be fun – not just a grind to get all the essential elements organised.

For today’s blog post, though, we’re going to focus on just one aspect of the process: shopping for a wedding dress. Here are five pointers that will assist you in making all the right choices.

1) Give yourself time

Ideally, you should start your quest to find the perfect wedding dress about 12 months before the big day. This may seem quite far in advance, but you need leave enough time for delivery (three to six months), fittings and alterations (four to eight weeks).

2) Set a budget

It is easy to overspend if you don’t set a budget. To avoid any disappointment and added costs, it is best to stick to your budget and to only try on dresses you know you can afford. In addition to the dress, take into consideration the cost of your shoes, jewellery and accessories.

3) Know your body type

We are all unique and have parts of our body that we love and other parts we may not be so fond of. If you want to feel confident in your dress on your big day, it would be a good idea to know your body type, so that you can choose the best shaped dress for your assets. For example, a V-neckline can be very flattering if you are ‘top heavy’, or you could consider a full feminine skirt to add curves to an athletic frame.

4) Keep travel arrangements in mind

You will also need to keep your wedding destination and transportation in mind when you are buying your wedding dress. If you are planning to have your wedding abroad, such as in Gibraltar, you may want to consider the size and weight of your dress to avoid issues when transporting it. Knowing what the weather will be like at your chosen location will also help with picking out your dress. Are you after a cosy, enchanting, winter wedding? Or would you prefer a warmer climate?

If it is the sun that you’re after, weddings in Gibraltar are ideal, as the British Overseas Territory offers around 300 lovely days of sunshine a year. Gibraltar’s summers are warm and its winters mild, so if you do decide on a winter wedding, you won’t be having to trudge down the aisle in your snow boots!

5) Know what you want

You are more likely to find what you are looking for quicker if you know what you want. It may be a good idea to flick through some wedding magazines or look online for inspiration.

Visualise how you would like to look on your special day. Think about the shape of the dress, the neckline and materials. Is comfort a big factor? Would you like embroidery or embellishments? There is a lot to think about, but knowing your preferences in good time will help narrow down your options.
