5 Smart Tips to Make Moving Easier

by Ronald Wolf Business Consultant

One of the rare occasions where you have to separate and label your household objects thus creating a list that would contain everything AND the kitchen sink would be moving. (The only other situation where you’d have to do this would probably be an auction.)

That said, many folks, discouraged by the tedium of the process itself, tend to abandon the preparation steps of moving and just try to pack their stuff willy-nilly when the guys with the van show up.

Of course, the effects of this are often plenty of shouting, angry parents, crying children, increased costs, and forgetting to pack your home pet.

In this article, we’ll propose to you five different moves you can do before the moving folks come about, in order to make your moving much easier.

Here’s the lot.

1) Come up With a Schedule

Time management is one of the most important skills for ensuring a merry and hassle-free moving process.

Some folks have an inborn talent for it and can easily multi-task different events in their mind. For those less talented, however, coming up with a good ole schedule can be just the thing to level out the playing field, so to speak. (As if time management was a competitive sport. Well, anyway.)

Having a clear idea of when different moving-related steps should happen will make the whole process ten times easier, no doubt about it.

2) Pack up a Special Box for the First Day

With moving, many people make a mistake of viewing the moving process as a continuous line of events that should all be completed without a pause.

So, after they've had a tough day packing up all of their stuff and traveling to their new destination, they can end up trying to unpack everything and even arrange it properly as soon as they arrive! (You’d need to be drunk or mad to do that sort of thing! Or lead a minimalistic lifestyle.)

Rather than rushing things, pack up a special box of the most necessary things (and perhaps a little somethin' somethin' in the shape of a carton of beer) that you’ll be using on the first day upon your arrival.

This way, you can relax when you get to your new destination and enter the unpacking phase with new energy come tomorrow!

3) Employ Space-Saving Techniques

It may seem a tad boring, (and it probably is, in all fairness) but saving some space by packing smaller items into other slightly larger container-like items Matryoshka-style can be a great way to make your move more organized and orderly.

What’s more, if you have a large household, doing this can mean you’ll have to make fewer van or truck trips back and forth from your old residence to your new home.

4) Write a List of all the Objects

Here’s an interesting proposition. If you’re concerned you might lose some of your precious objects along the way while moving, or think that you’ll have a tough time finding it when unpacking, creating a list of all, or at least the majority of your household objects is a must.

While putting down on paper each and every nail and pencil might be a bit over the top, creating a list of some of the medium-to-large-size items will make your life much easier when it comes to finding the lot after you've arrived at your new destination!

5) Use this Opportunity to Get Rid of the Old Clutter

Moving presents quite a hefty opportunity for you to get rid of some of the useless things around your house.

Whether it’s an old wheelbarrow in your garage, or a collection of old magazines in your loft, getting rid of these things will make you decrease the size of your haul for the new house, as well as concentrate on the items you do need.

For this process, however, you might need some waste containers. If you happen to live in Australia, you can look for some of these containers at Skip Bin Hire.

In conclusion, moving, as stressful as it can be, also represents a great opportunity to organize yourself and really ponder what you do and don’t need around your house. To make your move more efficient and easy-to-accomplish, simply employ some of the time-saving techniques, use a bit of on-the-spot creativity, and Bob’s your uncle!
