5 Plants that Thrive in High Moisture Environments

by Kevin Smith Author

Some of the agriculture that people depend on can be extremely hardy. Plants like cotton and onions can endure very hot and dry climates and require less care than other vegetation. Some plants, like these 5 varieties, are thirsty plants that need to stay moist almost constantly in order to grow well. These plants naturally grow in wet environments so if you are attempting to farm them, you need to keep them wet. You may want to research agriculture sprayer supply products for a list of thorough watering tools offering large, tent-like coverage, including TeeJet nozzles and Greenleaf sprayers.

Take care to keep the following 5 types of vegetation moist, including their soil and leaves.

Lettuce

Most types of lettuce love full sun, moderate temperatures, and ample water. It's important to keep lettuce well-watered to prevent wilting or stunted growth, especially in the summer because lettuce is a cool-weather plant.

Cauliflower

It requires a great deal of water for firm and crisp heads of cauliflower to grow, especially because of the enormous average size of cauliflower heads. Keeping cauliflower in rich, moist, and well-drained soil encourages full and successful growth.

Broccoli

Broccoli is native to the moist climate of the Mediterranean, where full sun and ample water encourage crisp and deep-green growths. Keep broccoli well-watered so they thrive, especially during the fast growth that occurs during sunlight hours.

Celery

Celery is prized for its leaves, stalks, and seeds, so these valuable plants should undergo close care. Celery is a thirstier plant than most other vegetables, and the risks associated with under-watering are high. Fail to keep celery moist to its liking and it will grow bitter, inedible stalks.

Cabbage

Like lettuce, cabbage prefers cooler weather and moist soil, perhaps even more so than lettuce because cabbage leaves taste best when they hold a large amount of moisture. Because good cabbage needs to absorb a large quantity of water, the plants need very moist soil and leaves.

When you care for thirsty vegetation, you should take care not to flood the plants, as this will cause them to lose nutrients, flavor, color, and/or crispness. Finding balance is key, and watering individual plant species for optimal moisture guarantees the best, most consistent results, so they can even handle harsh conditions.
