5 New Year’s Resolutions for a Happy & Healthy Spine

by Kristopher Samuels Writer

Did you spend all of last year suffering from back pain? You wouldn’t be alone! Nearly 80 percent of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lives, while one in five adults live with chronic back pain. With stats like these, it’s easy to believe back pain is just a normal part of growing older. But do you really have to endure it for the rest of your life?

Luckily, the best chiropractic clinic in your area will tell you the answer is a big no. Pain-free living is possible if you commit to healthy habits. Make your spinal health a priority in the New Year by setting these simple yet effective goals.

1. Make an Appointment with a Chiropractor

Speaking with a professional about your back pain will help you understand the underlying cause of your discomfort. They’ll conduct a thorough assessment to make sure they create a comprehensive treatment plan specific to your needs, symptoms, and objectives.

2. Get Moving

Leading an active lifestyle can reduce your risk of lower back pain, as well as a whole host of other health issues including stroke and heart disease.

But let’s be honest — it’s not easy being active during the winter. If you’d rather hibernate in your blanket burrito in front of the TV, find a workout buddy who will inspire you to get off the couch. Join a gym, fitness class, or a recreational sports league to get up and be active.

3. Strengthen Your Core

Your core is made up of several muscles that support your spine. They need to be strong to be able to do the job. Whether you visit a gym or workout from home, integrate strength-building exercises that focus on your abs, back, and neck.

If you suffer from severe back pain, talk to your chiropractor or healthcare professional to make sure you perform these exercises safely.

4. Stretch Every Day

Tight muscles do no favour to your spine, as they’re common culprits behind back pain. A daily stretching routine will help improve your flexibility and reduce stiffness that may cause discomfort. It may also help you correct imbalances in the spine.

Wake up 15 minutes early to start your day with a simple stretching routine. If you work at a desk for hours at a time, break up your day with these “deskercises” designed for the office.

5. Get a Good Night’s Rest

What’s your favourite sleeping position? Is it on your stomach or side? If so, you may be doing damage to your spine while you sleep. These positions disrupt your alignment and may increase your chances of tweaking something at night.

Try sleeping on your back and investing in a good mattress and pillow. If you can’t help but turn on your side during the night, look into pillows designed for side-sleepers.

Stay Motivated!

Depending on the severity of your back pain, reducing your discomfort may not happen overnight. But given enough time, these tips will help improve your spinal health.

So don’t give up if you don’t notice a difference right away. Commit to these habits for at least a few months before you re-evaluate your approach. Chances are, if you stick with them for long enough, you’ll say goodbye to back pain in 2020.
