5 interesting facts about TMT Bars

by Ankita Sehgal Freelance Blogger, Lives in New Delhi

TMT Bars have been used in the construction industry for years owing to their features and benefit. They are used in building bridges, houses, malls and residential places. The ability to bond with concrete and hold a structure erect is outstanding. Mentioned below are a few interesting facts about TMT bars you should know:

Incredible strength

The unique Tempcore technology is used for manufacturing TMT bars at plants like JSW steel Dolvi. The process includes putting the bars into the rolling mill and quenching them intensely once they are taken out.

The quenching process includes passing the bars through numerous water jets that will help to bring down the temperature of the outer layer rapidly and make it hard while leaving the soft inner core warm and soft. This is the reason why TMT bars are extremely ductile.

Corrosion Resistant

Thanks to the unique manufacturing process, TMT bars are renowned for their high corrosion resistance.

Contrary to traditional bars, TMT bars are not twisted. This helps in eliminating any residual stress on the TMT bars. Further, while water is used during the quenching process for cooling, it is done in a very controlled manner so that the formation of coarse carbides can be avoided. Coarse carbides are one of the main reasons behind the corrosion of steel bars.

High ductility

TMT bars are renowned for their high ductility. Various grades such as Fe- 415/500/550 signify their strength. The higher the grade of the bars, the better will be the strength. Compared to other bars, these are far stronger and more durable. This is one of the primary reasons for using TMT bars in all the major construction projects. Also, the rate of TMT bars is very reasonable.

Extremely flexible and great bending ability

One of the significant features of TMT bars is that it can be moulded and given different shape so that particular demands of any construction or design of the building is met. Since the TMT bars have a softer core, they are extremely flexible. This feature makes TMT bars very useful during any type of construction.

Safe during earthquakes

The unique manufacturing process of TMT bars results in a soft core and tough outer layer. Further, they have superior elongation properties and are extremely flexible.  This makes TMT bars resistant to earthquakes.  People living in earthquake prone areas always use TMT bars during constructions.
