5 digital marketing trends that will die in 2017
While all other marketers are presenting the list of predictions of what new trends are expected in digital marketing in the new year. But here are some predictions by top Kansas city SEO experts to those trends that are expected to die in 2017 unless they get a major form of life support.
Twitter
While it may be too early to say goodbye to Twitter, it is struggling while Facebook and Snapchat continue to grow. Twitter’s share is 27.3% among all its social media users, which is decline compared to previous numbers which were 28.1%.
Although the return of Jack Dorsey may indicate a wave of improvements.Twitter has been declining for years now, and it may be too late. The company made minor changes last year like not counting videos and images towards the 140 characters limit and also hinted at more changes but it will take more than a little bit of flexibility to pursue new users.
Twitter struggled during 2016 with a potential sale to Salesforce which ultimately did not happen, appearing to indicate Twitter isn’t seen as an attractive target. The company also cut about 300 jobs, with more cuts expected to occur this year.
Just as Twitter seems to be losing its hold on social media, other networks like Pinterest and Instagram are growing rapidly. Instagram grew to over 600 million users in 2016, adding 100 million of them in just the last six months of the year. Pinterest also passed a major growth milestone, announcing it had assembled more than 150 million active monthly users.
Big banner Ads
There was a time when there were big banner ads on every site, distracting you from concentrating to your purpose. But this trend is fading away now as marketers concentrate on other tools such as native advertising, which have been shown to be 53% more likely to generate leads. Much of this trend appears to be related to higher mobile pages where click rate on banners is notoriously low.
Fake Reviews
Around 70% of consumers check online reviews before making a purchase. Around 88% of customers believe online reviews are so authentic as personal recommendations. This has attracted the industry that produces fake reviews to those who are willing to pay for them. In 2015, Amazon began filing lawsuits against the companies for publishing fake reviews. Consumers are also becoming more smart. When fake reviews will stop working, companies won’t buy from them much longer.
Stock Images
The use of stock images is decreasing as the businesses start adopting personalized images and videos. Generic stock images don’t support an authentic identity and restrain users from connecting with brands that use those stock images. On the other hand, personalized images improve content performance by increasing shares, likes, and click through rates.
Popup Ads
In August 2016, google has announced that it is now looking to penalize websites that use annoying pop-up ads and interstitials. Do pop up works? Sure, but the Google has noticed that people don’t like visiting sites with pop-up ads as much as they like to visit sites that don’t have them, so it only makes sense for Google to boost the ranking of sites that remove them.
Shape your 2017 digital marketing strategy keeping these trends in minds. If you are planning to invest more on fake reviews or Twitter ads, it may be the time to change that plan.
