What is meditation? To define it is not that simple; on the surface, it may look like just focusing on an object, a mantra, or to be mindful while sitting quietly, to take deep breaths and paying attention to them, but deep down, it is “losing ourselves and unstringing the logic”. Meditation brings a vast amount of benefits to mental and physical health and overall well-being.

Meditation can help to relieve all these problems and can be the cause that brings balance to life. Listed below are some benefits that meditation provides to physical and psychological health;

1. IMPROVE DIGESTION: As many Yoga Gurus say, improper digestion is the root of almost all health problems. Digestion may be affected by age and psychological problems like stress and depression. Deep breathing and mindfulness achieved during meditation improve blood circulation and improve metabolism, and digestion.

2. REDUCES STRESS AND DEPRESSION: Meditation help brings a balance to the hormonal imbalance as during meditation, one truly doesn’t keep track of things that stress them. Moreover, it brings a sense of happiness due to the happy hormones that get released during meditation.

3. IMPROVE SLEEP: Almost half the population suffers from insomnia at some point in their lives. Meditation is highly beneficial when releasing tension and producing a state of comfort, both of which are required for a good sleep. Racing thoughts and stress-induced due to them are some of the reasons behind insomnia. Getting efficient and skilled in practicing meditation enables one to control and comprehend thoughts and emotions better, hence preventing insomnia.

4. MAINTAIN BLOOD PRESSURE: Meditation is very effective for dealing with irregular blood pressure. High blood pressure is a common problem these days, even in younger people. Conditions of high blood pressure or hypertension put a strain on the heart. Meditation is all about controlling the activities inside us. Controlled breathing and a focused brain are beneficial for our central nervous system and blood pressure. With the relaxation that controlled breathing provides, the irregularities in blood pressure get reduced with time, hence preventing the problems caused by high blood pressure.

5. IMPROVED FOCUS AND ATTENTION: One of the distinct features of meditation is that it involves and encourages living in the present living it to the fullest. This enables the brain to clear all the fog that arises from it wandering aimlessly between past and future. Meditation helps bring the mind into the present and thus clearing the fog. When the mind is at present and at one with itself, it can focus better. This also results in improved attention span and improved memory.
