5 Beauty Trends That Inspired Us to Fake It in 2013
In the beauty world, it’s common knowledge that French women fake it, and as Francophiles this is something we’ve always heeded when considering new trends. This year in particular, faking it was all the rage whether it was painting on faux power brows à la Cara Delevingne or simulating bobs as a nod to the Gatsby revival. With this in mind, and in lieu of the glitziest of all holidays: New Year’s Eve, we’ve rounded up the 5 most deceptive beauty techniques of 2013.
1. The Faux Bob

This style of coif didn’t exactly appear out of nowhere. In fact, it has been gaining traction for years. But when Gatsby fever was in full bloom this past spring, stars began hitting the town in the perfectly polished and cropped style in spades. Even though many have gone for the chop this year, parting with our shoulder-length tresses seems no less daunting, so this look really does the trick for a one-night-only roaring night out on the town.
2. The Bold Brow

If we had known in 7th grade what we know today, we’d be far better off — and have had waybetter brows. In 2013, we bid adieu to the unexplainable temptations to over-tweeze our eyebrows, thanks, in large part if not solely, to Cara Delevingne. However, it’s important to note that not everyone is blessed with her prominent-brow genetics, which means faking is likely the only way to go. It seems no one is doing it better than Jena Malone, who has transformed her entire look with the magic of brow gels, powders, and pencils.
3. Faux Lashes

Most women swear it’s all in the lashes, and after applying our first pair of falsies earlier this year, we never understood it to be more true. Sure, not all faux lashes are created equal — and by that we mean, unlike Beyoncé, we cannot afford to shill out $30 to $80 for a pair of mink falsies. We’ve found that with a proper cat eye (like Adele’s, above), even a $6 pair by Revloncan transform your peepers.
4. Faux Hawk

You may still be faking it, but to achieve this look you typically have to do something drastic (i.e. get a pixie cut in the manner of Miley). If going under the scissor scares you, or you’re too paranoid that you’ll end up channeling Ronnie from Jersey Shore, those with long hair can find plausible, albeit unorthodox, inspiration from Fendi’s Fall 2013 runway by incorporating elaborate braids and fuzzy buggies into the mix.
5. Faux Freckles

Ever since we learned about Gucci Westman’s fake freckle trick from Olivia Wilde, we’ve been staring at the noses of Hollywood’s finest trying to figure out who has been fooling us with their speckles all along.
While it might be a puzzling premise at first — especially considering how popular the matte look is — Wilde has convinced us that we can further deceive onlookers by feigning a natural look with drawn-on flecks. “When you put on foundation you lose some of that natural look so the freckles can make it look like you’re not wearing anything which is nice,” she told Nylon.
