4 Tips for Buying a Good Quality Comforter

by Tyler P. A Passionate Blogger - Entertainment

You need not be in Alaska in order to purchase a comforter. Today, down comforters come in various shapes and sizes and even colors. But, before getting into the details of a down comforter, first, let’s understand what it means. A down comforter is just like quilt, blanket or a duvet. But, the only tiny difference is that it is made from the feathers of a goose or a duck. This makes the down comforters extremely soft and comfortable.

But, if you have never purchased a down comforter before, it could get a bit overwhelming. If you are completely unaware of the inner linen language and other terms, read further and get an understanding of purchasing a down comforter. They may look the same, and you would wonder why to take the efforts, but if you want a comforter that suits your needs, you must do some research.

1. The Fill Power of the Comforter

The quality of a down comforter is determined by the inside filler. If good quality feathers are used in the making of the comforter, it will give you more comfort—the higher the filler, the better the quality of the down comforter. High quality down comforter means it is fluffier, lighter, breathable and warmer. The fill power is measured in cubic inches, and generally, the most expensive ones go beyond 700 cubic inches. The lower quality ones are usually below 400 cubic inches.

2. Quality of the Feathers

Lots of manufacturers use artificial material to fill in the down comforter to save costs. But, a synthetic or artificial material cannot replace the organic feathers of a goose. High quality down is gathered from the underbelly of a mature duck or goose. But, if the feathers are taken from a young bird, the quality of the filler lowers down. So, when you decide to order an all-season down comforter, make sure the filler is of the highest quality.

3. The Materials Used

The quality of a comforter is also determined by its thread count. The thread count simply means the number of thread per square inch of the fabric. A higher thread count generally means that the fabric is woven tight and will give you comfort and warmth. A lower thread count comforter is made from the muslin cloth and is not of the highest quality. When you buy alternative goose down comforter, make sure you double-check the thread count and ask relevant questions.

4. Comfort and Warmth

Choose a comforter which gives a warmth level that is suitable for your room temperature. If you live in extremely cold weather, you must look for a comforter that gives maximum warmth. But, if you live in a pleasantly mild area, go for a lesser warm comforter. The filler in the down comforter decides the level of warmth, and you must be aware of the filler details before purchasing one. If you end up buying a comforter without any prior knowledge, it will be a waste of money and time.
