4 Tips for an Easier Fracture Recovery

It's tempting to just lie on the couch for days and rest when you have to nurse a broken bone. But this won't do you any good. Your recovery will go better if you stay as active as your doctor allows.

 

You might have to do things differently for a while, but there are many rewards to being active such as rebuilding your strength. To help you ease back into your routine, here are a few tips that orthopedic care specialists from Suffolk County, NY, want you to know. 

Make Your Home Safe

If you're using a cane, walker, or a pair of crutches, you'll notice that it's hard to move around at home. As a solution, ask friends or family members to move furniture out of your usual path to make the house simpler to navigate. Not only will this make getting around easy, but it’ll be safer, too.

Make Daily Tasks Easy                                                                     

While your broken bone is healing, you’ll probably move differently. Going to physical therapy will definitely help because a therapist will show you how to do daily tasks safely. Before you go, here are some tips that can help you:

·         Have groceries delivered to make cooking a breeze. Additionally, when you're preparing meals, it's best to just push the pots around instead of lifting them up. This makes sure that you don't strain yourself.

·         When taking a bath, use long-handled sponges to wash your lower extremities. Placing rubber mats on the floor and bathtub are great safety precautions, too. You'll feel more stable while moving around the bathroom.

Stop Smoking                                                                      

Smoking can cause your blood vessels to constrict, which decreases your blood circulation. This affects the fracture site, causing it to heal slower. It could lead to a nonunion, a condition in which the bones fail to unite after a significant amount of time. Medical interventions are typically needed to fix this.

Take Supplements

During the first few weeks, you should take supplements to help your recovery. Calcium is an essential mineral for your bones to become stronger. To help your body metabolize it, also take a couple of vitamin D capsules.

 

If you don’t like taking them, try to modify your diet to get the nutrients you need for the day. Have some fun playing with different ingredients like dairy, fish, other kinds of meats, and vegetables.
