4 Things Your Exterminator Wished You Knew

by Kevin Smith Author

Just about every place in America potentially has a problem with pests. They may differ in type, size and scope, but it is difficult to find anywhere that is not in some way victim to some sort of rodent, insect or other type of animal. Also universal are certain “truths” exterminators implementing residential pest management in Long Island, NY wish everyone knew; here are a few.

Cleanliness Does Not Grant Pet Immunity

Pests are certainly attracted to homes that have open food, food on the floor, etc. They also, though, are attracted to moisture and dark hiding spaces. Moisture sources like gutters or areas of standing water can attract everything from mosquitoes to mice and just about everything in between. Keeping gutters unclogged, water flow off of roofs 3 to 4 feet away from the house and draining decorative pools and baths is key to helping remove attractors to pests.

Not Every Insect Is the Devil

Some pests like termites, yellow jacket wasps or cockroaches have little or no redeeming value. They destroy, period. Other “pests,” however, play a vital role and should be protected rather than exterminated. One is the spider. They creep some people out, especially if they are inside, but they view most insects as a meal. Plus, except for a couple of poisonous varieties, they are harmless to humans. The only risk spiders can pose, rarely, is an infestation, which is why you should contact an exterminator if you see a bunch of them, but one or two, or ten, throughout your house is no big deal and an effective tool against other insects.

You Can (Should) Help Your Exterminator

Pests can be eliminated, but if you do not do what is recommended to keep them out of your house, they will eventually return. Keep up on scheduling pest sprays and inspections, fix damaged screens or entrance points, etc. to make it more difficult for pests to get inside. Also, inspect every piece of luggage that comes from the outside as well as clothing if you stayed overnight somewhere. In short, do what the exterminator recommends in order to make it as hard as possible for the pests to take up residence again.

Cute Wild Animals Are Pests Too

That raccoon family you like to feed? They are pests. Feed birds in the winter? Mice and other rodents love your food too. Sure, it is nice to help out wildlife and baby raccoons are cute, but the more food you put around your home, the more likely it is a pest will take up residence, breed and populate your house with unwanted creatures. This is not a directive to ignore animals in winter or never feed any wild things, but understand that if you do it as a habit, it will attract pests to your home and they will commence looking for vulnerabilities.

These are just a few of many things your exterminator wishes you knew as they pursue residential pest management in Long Island, NY. If you followed just these, your pest issues would largely go away. That would make everyone’s life and the exterminator’s job much easier.
