4 Questions to Ask Before Buying a Winter Quilt in Australia

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

We know that Autumn has only just arrived, but it won’t be long until Winter beckons, and our thoughts turn to cosy. One way to inject some cosiness into your bedroom is with a new quilt, but how do you choose the best winter quilt in Australia for you?

There are a few things to take into consideration when buying a new quilt, such as weight and warmth and whether you prefer your quilt to be made of natural or synthetic fibres. We look at 4 questions to ask before buying a new quilt to ensure that you get the best one for the user.

1.       Who is the quilt for?

This is the first question you should ask yourself. The answers will determine whether you are looking for a lightweight or heavier quilt and whether the quilt should be easy to care for. For example, if you’re buying for a child, you may want to consider a lighter weight quilt that can be machine washed at home. If you’re buying for a couple, you may want to look at designs that have two different weights of quilt combined into one.

2.       Where will the quilt be used?

Not every state in Australia experiences the same kind of winter. So, you’ll need to consider what kind of temperatures you can expect. Will your room be heated or are you in a part of the country where air conditioning is still needed? Where the quilt will be used will determine the GSM (the weight of the quilt filling) and Loft (the measure of warmth based on its thickness) of your chosen quilt.

3.       What kind of filling do you prefer?

There are many types of quilts on the market ranging from synthetic polyester to traditional wool doonas. If you prefer a more natural, breathable, anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic filling, look for wool, bamboo and alpaca options. If you want the easy-care properties of synthetic fibres, a microfibre quilt may be a great option. If you suffer from allergies, woollen quilts are an ideal choice as they don’t allow dust mites to thrive.

4.       Does your quilt need to be easy to care for?

Caring for a winter quilt in Australia is relatively easy. All you need to do is give it a good shake daily to help remove dust and to keep the filling evenly distributed. No matter what your quilt is made from, it’s a good idea to hang it in the fresh air periodically to let it air out and allow trapped moisture to evaporate. Most modern-day quilts are machine washable, even those made from wool, but it may not be possible to fit larger and heavier quilts into a domestic washing machine. Just remember to follow the manufacturer’s recommended care instructions.
