Today pens are not only a medium of communication but are also treated as aesthetic and luxury goods. Consumers look for everything right from quality and finesse to style while buying a pen for their personal use. Find out what other factors you should consider while buying a pen.

They say that there are two powers in the world: one is the sword and the other is the pen. The sword is more primitive but not mightier than the latter. This writing equipment is an instrument of discovery rather than mere recording. A good pen is not just about an appealing design. It is also about an excellent mechanism, a good writing point, little to no pressure and most importantly, comfort. You can have different writing experiences with your pen depending on what kind of pen you choose- fountain pen, roller ball pen or a ballpoint pen. Here are few things that you should look in a pen while buying:

God fit:

Make sure there are no loose fitting parts in the pen. The cap of the pen should offer a smooth and snug fit by snapping, twisting or pressure fitting and no space or gap in-between. Check whether or not the pen has a secured cap band. The pocket clip should also be straight and strong and should go back in place after you have given it a slight pull to clip in the pocket.

Smooth finish:

When it comes to the different types of finishes, you are spoilt for choices. You can choose from resins, metal, celluloid, wood and more. You also have the freedom to choose between colorful plastics and engraved metals or a blend of both. For good quality it is important to check the finish. For example, when the pen is closed the pattern on the cap and barrel should align perfectly. Touch the surface of the pen to check for rough edges along the length. The pen should be evenly polished with a uniform matte or gloss finish.

Right balance:

Hold the pen in writing in the writing posture and check whether it offers the perfect balance it should neither be too tilted towards the back or to the front. If the cap of the pen is designed to be put to the back while writing then try writing after doing so. A well deigned pen should be extremely comfortable to use and offer the perfect balance.

Writing nib/point:

If you are buying a fountain pen, run the nib over a piece of paper and make sure that it feels smooth and you don’t have to drag the nib. Capless roller ball pens and ballpoint pens should have a seamless extending and retracting mechanism. Make sure once extended the point stays in place.
