4 Cool American Towns Named After European Ones

by Reggie Moore Professional writer and proto entrepreneur

Many people are surprised to hear that America has towns and cities with European-sounding names, but they shouldn't be. The truth is that we owe many of our town names to the early settlers from across the Atlantic Ocean. And while some of these places have been around since colonization days, others were named in more recent times to commemorate an ancestor or pay tribute to their descendants still living abroad. In this blog post, We will explore cool American towns that share a name with another place in Europe:

Moscow in New York

Moscow is one of the oldest towns in America and was founded by British colonists in 1793. It's located on the border of New York State, which makes it a perfect gateway to Vermont. The town has also hosted three governors and several key figures in American history, including Aaron Burr (the Vice President who killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel).

Idaho is a U.S. state.

On the other hand, Idaho is located in the northwest of North America and has the largest percentage of mountainous land area in any American state. Idaho's largest city – Boise – is home to more than 200,000 people and has been listed as one of the most livable cities by various publications in recent times. In addition to its cool name, Idaho is also a state in the U.S. and was named by French-Canadian explorers who referred to it as "the land of the ice".

Nederland in Colorado

Nederland is a town in Boulder County, just west of Denver. It was named after the Netherlands (or "low countries") by Dutch immigrants who settled here in the late 19th century. Nederland's location on the side of Rocky Mountain makes it a perfect place to enjoy snow sports like skiing and sledging during wintertime. The town is also home to well-known artists and musicians and a handful of cannabis dispensaries. Keep this in mind when looking for houses for sale in Nederland, CO.

Stockholm in Maryland

Stockholm is an unincorporated community located in Baltimore County, approximately 20 miles northeast of Baltimore City. It was named by Swedish settlers who used the term "Stadt" (which means "city") to describe settlements with urban characteristics. Stockholm has an estimated population of 800 people, many of whom still speak Swedish.

Saint Petersburg in Florida

Saint Petersburg is a city located in Pinellas County, on the west coast of Florida. The city was founded by colonists from Russia and got its name after Saint Peter (who, according to local lore, was kept prisoner near here for several years). It's one of America's most popular tourist destinations: almost 4 million people visited Saint Petersburg in 2013, and that number is only set to rise.

These four European-inspired town names are just a small sample of the many found in North America. But they do show how important this continent's roots are – and with any luck, we won't have to rename these places anytime soon.
