4 Best Methods to Eliminate Construction, Demolition, and Renovation Waste
by Kevin Smith AuthorDebris and garbage can overwhelm your site. How do you
dispose of rusty nails, wood, shards, concrete, glass, and other wastes to keep
the area clean, with less hazards? Here are four tips, on ways you can
eliminate various kinds of waste on your site.
Donate
Things that are no longer of value to you could benefit
families, communities, nonprofit organizations, churches, and schools. Salvage
as many items as possible, and avoid damaging items that are still in decent
condition. You can donate usable pieces such as windows, cabinets, light
fixtures, appliances, and more, to centers.
You can give away carpets with no patches or stains, unused
tongue-and-groove floorings, leftover paints, working old appliances, wood, and
laminate wood flooring, siding, sinks, tubs, and other reusable materials. But
before you send them, call first to find out what they do and do not accept.
There are even organizations across the country that utilize renovation waste
to build homes, like the Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Some of them even offer
free pick-up for contractors and homeowners with large items to donate.
Recycle and Reuse
If you have items that are still in good shape, consider
using them in other locations of the house, like the basement bar, barn, garden
shed, workshop, garage, and laundry room. Some flooring, countertops, and
cabinets may only need a bit of cleaning and painting to suit your new layout
or style. You can dismantle cabinets to reconstruct new ones.
You can deliver your leftover paint to paint-recycling
centers. For your asphalt shingles, search for shingle recycling centers nearby.
You can also search for close by carpet recyclers, contractors, or companies
that may want to resale them.
Sell
If you have refrigerators, stoves, and appliances that still
work but need to be disposed of, restorers, dealers, or resale stores will get
them off your hands, and sometimes for cash. You can sell old or damaged
items for scraps, for 10 cents per pound, in some cases. Just search for a
salvaged-metal dealer near you.
Also, sell your bulk metals, such as copper, and aluminum,
and steel. They are a valuable commodity.
Haulers and Dumpster Services
If you don’t have time to separate garbage, call up a
company that specializes in deconstruction and disposal of waste. They will not
only help you save money and time, but they will also help you save the
environment. They know how to better segregate the materials and what to do
with hazardous trash. You can also rent a roll-off dumpster to contain and
transport the waste materials for proper disposal. Roll-off dumpsters are very
convenient if you have bulk trash and they are cost-effective for small jobs.
