With Medela’s accessories, we have created a happy place for all the mommies. Becoming a mother is the most beautiful feeling in this world but it hands you over the responsibility of a newborn in your hands. And, the very first thing that comes to your mind is breastfeeding the baby. Mother’s must breastfeed their babies for the first 6 months and can continue with their breast milk until the child turns 2, as recommended by the WHO.

There are millions of new mothers not knowing about the intake of nutrients for their babies. They too have a lot of questions about breastfeeding for the first time viz. the procedure, the appropriate way, etc. For now, all that you need to do is to calm down and consider that your baby will soon get used to of latching onto you. We have compiled a list of breastfeeding tips so that you can sit back and relax to have an experience of wiser motherhood:

1) Catch the signs of your baby: To breastfeed your baby, you need not wait for them to cry and give you a sign. Instead, you can start to identify the signs that they give through their body language.

  • Repeatedly raising or turning their heads
  • Opening and closing their mouth
  • Stick out their tongue
  • Suck on whatever is near to them

If you are able to identify any of the above signs, breastfeed your child straight away. When the baby knows that they don’t have to make many efforts to grab attention, they bond better with you.

2) The baby knows better about their needs, let them know how long to take for nursing: Being a mother, we know you are worried that your baby is hungry but don’t set a time interval for them to feed because they know about their need. The don’ts are:

  • No need to deny them food because you know it has not been their time to have it.
  • No need to wake your sleeping baby up just because it’s time to feed them. Let them wake up and then have their feed.
  • No need to worry if the breastfeeding lasts just for a mere span of 10 mins and don’t panic if that extends to 45 mins.

The babies take their sweet time to adjust with their timings. Some are slow while others are fast. And, remember that their need is better known to them.

3) Leaking is normal, don’t freak out: Your breasts are filled up with milk and if they leak in the first few weeks of breastfeeding, it’s totally natural. It can happen when some other baby cries or when you feel strong emotion for your baby or when your baby hasn’t nursed for some hours. Don’t worry because this will soon be sorted when your baby becomes used to of nursing. Till then, you may use the breastfeeding solutions like nursing pads to absorb the leakage.
